A few weeks ago I posted asking for information about peritonitis as my 7yo TB had just been taken into horspital with it. I had very mixed stories and several wishes of good luck so thought I post a quick update....

Baz came home 3 weeks ago and had a further 10 days on antibiotics in his feed. I was told to return him to normal management so we've had a few steady hacks and he's had lots of TLC.

I've just had his blood tests back and he's been given the all clear!! I'm so relieved! It didn't look good for a few days so its nice to know that they can make a good recovery.

They don't know what caused it - he had full body scans and three gastroscopes and they couldn't find anything - apparently (but not reassuringly!) this is common - however in the cases where the cause is undetermined most horses respond well to treatment. Peritonitis is at its most deadly when there has been a perforation or penetration injury as its more difficult to control the spread of the infection so he was scoped to rule this out.

The scope did find some grade 1/2 gastric ulcers which have been blitzed with Gastrogard and I'm now maintaining them using Equine America U-Gard Plus. He had dropped lots of weight and I've always struggled to get it on anyway but he's starting to fill out nicely now - though he should be with the amount I'm spending on feed and supplements ;-)
