When I was learning to drive this was a basic road safety etiquette but I'm noticing more and more people not bothering.

I live on a busy ( rat run ) semi rural road with no road markings other than the middle line and lots of ditches, twists and turns yet it seems people are happy to 'blind' each other. Its not too bad if its one car but when you get several in a row its annoying.

And whilst I 'm on the subject parents please ensure your bike riding children are in light clothing and have bike lights. Black clothing against dark hedges and no cycle lanes is a recipe for disaster at dusk.

Rant over. Thankyou.

I have this same problem.
I live on a very quiet lane, when walking back home with the dogs in the dark, when an occasional car does pass they dont dip their lights and would rather blind me.

Same problem when driving, down lots of lanes, pitch black and people dont dip their lights.

Just as annoying is when a car drives behind you with full lights on, it reflects in the mirror and blinds you that way!

My hubby goes nuts about people using their foglights. :D

You would have thought that somebody would have invented a sensor that detects other cars and automatically dips headlights by now.

I think the cars with the non dippable headlights and the non turnoffable fog lights probably belong to the same people who buy cars without indicators :p There seem to be a lot of them about :D

LOL

So we should be grateful for a steering wheel and brakes then.

Seems I'm being just too demanding :D

Here in rural Ireland everyone drives with fogs (four in total) lights on day or night often. Many of which are also those super bright white ones. In a queue with oncoming traffic you're almost totally blind! Meeting someone on narrow roads causes much braking as well. :(
I'm talking about driving myself here not riding. No way would I be out on any road here at night with a horse.

Modern lights are much brighter and it's possible they are dipped already. It's just hard to tell

I think those bloody white/blue lights should be illegal

The glare driving at night is so much worse these days. My mum has had to give up driving at night all together as she can't cope with the glare and can't wear tinted specs to combat it as she would in daylight. :(

There was something going through a petition about Xenon lights (white / blue ones). Car manufacturers apparently recon they are safer as allow the driver to see more clearly - shame about the rest of the road users it blinds

I think that these car owners/drivers, are also the same drivers who believe that the smaller non 4x4 car must be made to mount the grass verges on these narrow dark twisty lanes and get out of there way at all times

I seem to be dazzled more these days - but my OH says the modern lights are brighter and as your eyesight deteriorates as you get older, they dazzle more! Bl**dy cheek! I am amazed, too by how many cars these days don't have indicators on!?! :p

I have to say that I haven't run into many of these problems up here.
If someone doesn't turn off their full beam, when you flash them they do - although there may be one or two that don't but that is rare :)

Those Xenon lights though, are extremely annoying and eye straining.

Joyous - Not just 4x4s but if someone goes past a pull in place on a single track road, then I won't pull over. Why should I bump my car up a verge when they could easily have stopped, so nope, they can bump their car up a verge instead.
If there isn't a pull in spot, then we both pull out of the way. :)

Because they can't possibly get there new 4x4 dirty ;)

I have a cure for the ones with full beam that drive up behind me, I flick on my 'work light' in the boot of my car. Soon makes them break hard, back off and lower their beam. Very much a don't try this at home kids! Just waiting til I do that to the local police and get a fine, but it's the same range rover every time and unfortunately he'll never learn. :(

I'm so glad they are pertitioning the Xenon lights. They're too dangerous. They're so blinding, it's bad enough driving across the forest in some places watching for the ponies incase they walk in the road, but with these lights you just see white blur.

The other one I hate is when they drive up to you with full beam until the last second and flick it off. By then I'm blind and crawling at 10mph because I can't see, again I flick my lights in there face.

I've began to treat them with the same contempt. Smiling and being nice gets you nowhere.

I've noticed it too. Or they come up behind you with them on and your getting blinded from ever angle.

However, I think newer cars have a lot brighter lights. I know OHs Merc has LED lights which are almost white.

Oh, that drives me nuts! They don't stop coming and bully you off road!
It's invariably 4X4 drivers that do this to me.

Unfortunately we don't have any pull in spots, last night i had someone in a transit van, bully me over onto a grass verge  can i come and live up by you? i don't mind if both parties are prepared to give a little room

My favourite car faux pas atm...

I drive a relatively small station wagon (red rover died, in case anyone noticed this little inconsistancy!) and yet I have to drive up banks so that four by fours can stay on the road.
Doesn't this defeat the entire object of owning a four by four????
Also, my car is white, so mud shows up more... shove over you selfish what nots!

i think it's this ,i drive a 4x4 so i'm higher up than in a normal car and even then some of the lights blind me.
As for passing on narrow roads, i don't care what you're driving, if you go past the passing place you will have to go on the verge to avoid me, just because i have a 4x4 doesn't mean i have off road tyres on and have it in 4 wheel drive at all times just so i can avoid annoying peeps in noddy cars :p
my 4x4 is not in constant 4 wheel drive so for all intents and purposes it is like any other car on the road, plus it has road tyres on so no more grip than normal cars;)

Lol! I'd like to think you'd meet me half way though. ;)
