Our new mare (we've only had her two weeks) was playing in the field today and fell whilst cantering. When she got up she was on three legs but by the time I could get to her she was walking on all four but very odd with her right hind. She could only trot on three legs.

I'm just back from the vets and have settled her in for a long period of box rest, she has ruptured her peroneus tertius. My vet will consult with Rossdales but in the meantime I wondered whether anyone had any experience of this problem and it's treatment.

She's a lovely girl and we are so pleased with her, I just can't believe this has happened.

I found that link googling earlier, I've also located ultrasound machines on eBay and I'll ask the vet whether he'll show me how to use it in the hope it helps a bit.

still can't really believe it

And the latest is that the insurance company have decided that they won't offer any cover and say that they had never made an offer of cover either verbal or written. "Strange" I said "as I have in my hand at the moment a letter stating that you have offered cover for 14 days".

So they have raised a complaint for their quality department. Did I need this at this time? NO!

Sorry to hear about your girl, hope she's coming on really well, not sure of the prognosis on this injury yet

A few years ago the pony my daughter used to ride ruptured his Peroneus tertius. He didn't have any specific treatment, just box rest then restricted turn out, then slowly back into work. We put him on Balanced Horse Feeds Joint and Muscle booster. I can't remember the time scale but he came totally right, and he was in his twenties, and went on to win Reserve Champion in the Veteran class at the Midland Championships. He is still going strong and is now about 27. Would definitely recomment the J & M booster, and just give your mare time and hopfully she will be ok.

Just consulted my dusty copy of Adams Lameness in Horses for you. Treatment = Complete rest, surgical intervention is not recommended. Quiet box rest 4-6 weeks followed by further 2 months limited exercise, with hand leading at first. Prognosis guarded to favourable when properly rested by confinment. If healing is not evident by 4-6 weeks then guarded prognosis as tendon may not unite. (Box rest important then!) Final appraisal is not recommended for at least 3 months.

She must have really been unlucky as the injury is usually seen in extreme overextension in the hock and is common in Barrel Racers!!

Wow thank you!

She's not settling very well to her box rest - she's on plenty of ACP but still wants to walk round and round.

I saw her do it, she wasn't going mad, just cantering fairly fast playing, turned a corner, legs went from underneath her and there she was on three legs when she got up.

My youngster had the same fall being silly on the lunge the other day, just got up and carried on having gone smack on her side.

Guess she was just really really unlucky.

Know the feeling my TB made a hole in her knee and after surgery she was on box rest, she walked her self fit enough to do a 3 mile chase, I have chalk floors luckily as they are soft but she walked he bedding off and in the morning she was white, her rug was white and all the cobwebs were white! had to run out an buy rubber mats!!!

I hung hay nets all round the stable and lickits etc but in the end the others had to take shifts in with her! It's really difficult when they are like that.
