My boy has had a persistent cough for over 5 weeks now. When it first started, he also had a snotty nose which has now cleared, and he's had all the swabs, bloods etc to eliminate any "sinister" causes ... all negative. But the cough persists, and the vet has said that if it's not better by now (ish) he'd recommend scoping to see if there's anything going on we ought to know about. Although the cough is slightly better than it was, pony is still coughing on gentle exertion (walk or steady trot) and when standing in his stable. At present, I'm not treating it with anything. He's had a course of antibiotics, but has now finished them. So, should I proceed to getting the scoping done or give it a bit longer to clear? Not sure what to do. The pony is well in himself, no temperature and eating well. Any thoughts or shared experiences would be very welcome. Thanks ...

Have you got rid of all possible causes ?

Soaked hay, clean stable, dust free bedding & cough syrup ?

I would try all of this before scoping, chances are the problem is due to some type of dust/pollen allergy.

One of mine has COPD and I find naf respirator boost very effective and can see a difference in 24 hours.

There has been a cough bug doing the rounds my pony had it and it sounds very similar to what your horse has and it took about 6 weeks for him to return to normal after 4 weeks he only coughed in trot when ridden. So vet said bring him back into work gentle hacking a few time a week don't trot if he coughs and then one day after about 6 weeks he stopped coughing. It was weird just like when I had a cough myself went on for ages and then one day just stopped coughing.

My pony had no temperature and i had vet out after 10 days he had a course of ventipulmin, antibiotics, and pain relief as she thought he had a sore throat and rest. Vet said sometimes can take coughs about 6 weeks to clear up and this year the pollen/dust has been bad so that probably makes it take longer to recover.

My horse had a cough that lasted six months over the winter I did have him scoped but it was rather traumatic as his throat was sore from all the coughing so wasn't pleasant for him, I didn't really learn anything other than it was definitely an infection and not dust related so if I were you I wouldn't bother ATM see how he goes especially if you think he is improving coughs can take forever
