Hi, am currently researching the demand or need for personal training geared towards general riding and competition fitness, looking into all areas, anyone who feels training would help them, is already receiving training or thinks the job is enough itself please let me know, esp anyone in the North Herts/South Cambs/East Suffolk areas. Thanks all!

There is a guy who does this - writes a monthly column for eventingworldwide.com and has some fairly high profile names on his books, so the demand is there.

Not from me though - don't have the time or money!

I don't know if there's enough demand to keep you fully occupied with only riders, but when I was entered for Badminton it was the kick up the proverbial I needed to get myself fit. I went to a girl who was a personal trainer but also competed to Intermediate level for sessions, and it was great being with someone who knew what I was talking about when I said I find such and such difficult. We did a lot of cardiovascular stuff, but she also made me do exercises on those big balls and other stuff for my balance. Good luck!

Do you think it would improve your performance if you took it up though?
Would you consider someone who came to you at the yard, worked with you and your horse?

Undoubtedly! Though I have a fairly good level of basic fitness as I rock climb and mountain bike when not riding. But yes, it would totally help my riding (however I was a bit of a fitness nerd back when I was adventure racing so know a bit about how different types of exercise can help different sports as AR is multi-sport endurance racing).

If I could afford it, I would totally use it, but for it to be worth your while, and for you to travel to see one client, I know I could not afford it! If I could, then I would use this service for sure (but I also know how tight my budget is each month, and it doesn't even run to membership of the council gym!).

Oh totally understand budgets! Its such a tricky thing, as horse people in general dont have the time for anything but their beautiful beasts! there is also the option of online personal training, so all done when you can fit it in but actual advice, exercises and support from a personal trainer at your fingertips!

Great idea in principle....but the reason I would have a personal trainer is I find the gym/conventional exercises deadly boring and need someone shouting at me to motivate me!

It would work for more disciplined people than me though. Only potential problem is people not doing the exercises correctly enough to get the real benefit - I used to see people doing stuff incorrectly all the time!

All good points, there would be videos showing exercises that can be downloaded. also one more question, with the hectic lifestyle how popular do you think nutritional advice would be, helping people to get the most out of the food they eat, to enhance and help performance riding, competeing and working? Thanks very much by the way, you're a great help!

Again, I think that kind of advice is useful as I am constantly amazed by the myths people believe about food and what to eat for what type of result!

I find this stuff really interesting as I have a biology degree so know a bit about that side of things, and was a real fitness nut a few years ago before I got back into horses so spent ages researching all the latest thinking on exercise types for various results. So I had one training programme specifically for an ice-climbing holiday, then another for adventure racing, and I do often toy with the idea of one for riding, but never quite get round to it!

If you have any enquiries or thoughts to add please pm me with contact details and can let you know about launch of website etc and some pt or nutritional advice. thanks all!

I don't have fitness trainer for riding, but I am training towards a half marathon an have got a trainer from Team Bath who is a GB athlete, olympics etc etc. He is great, very motivational even though I don't see him that often he gives me goals to work towards in terms of time and distance on my legs.

Its def better having him to tell me what to do, otherwise I would lose motivation and give up!

I'm interested in learning how to get myself fit as am quite overweight by a stone and half. Have started my own interval training programme by walking half a circuit, slow jog around our arena. I cannot do it for long on roads as it jars my knees. Our surface is well maintained and not deep and last time I did this I lost a stone. I need to keep it up though.

I did callanetics 11 years ago and became slim and toned but sadly the instructor gave it up. So have recently started pilates video. Likewise I don't have the budget for gym but joined for 3 month plan. Initially motivated but bored running/cycling and staring at a wall for an hour. When I'm fitter i thought I may join local Badminton club!

I'm certainly not one of the very wealthy ones, but would love some incentive to lose weight and get back to riding fitness again.

Perhaps you could do so PC/RC clinics. I could certainly give you some contacts. When do you come down here, you are welcome to come round for a coffee and to meet my gang.
