Im a freelance instructor and after the tax man decided to take 50% of last years tiny profit I thought I would ensure I spend as much as possible this year.

Im thinking I will get a few items of clothing which I will wear for working in, and claim them on the buisiness profit. I was wondering what to have if I went for soemthing personalised. I really like the company Spalsh and they do free personalisation, but cant decide.

I want soemthing sensible. I had ideas of "Riding Instructor" or "Equine Coach" but thought they were a bit boring. Possibly my name and one of these? Or can someone think of anything better?

Also any opinions on the BHS ROI clothing?

I am a freelance trainer/ groom and have a business name which i use and trade under. If i were to have anything personalised i would have my name, and then underneath the business name. Nothing on the back. Have never done it as as much as i'd like to i have always found it a bit self indulgent!! Otherise 'Equine Trainer' sounds quite good.

You can always just buy plain clothes and put through the business as 'work wear' it does not have to be personalised. As long as whatever you put through can be vaguely justified it can be put through the business. Also 50% tax can no way be correct on profit unless you earned over £40k ish and then you only pay 40% anyway????

In order to have paid 50% tax, you must have earned over £150,000! I don't call that a small profit - if you have paid 50% tax, I'd get yourself a new accountant! :o
In answer to your Q, I quite like "Riding Instructor" also, if you have your own website, you could put that across the bottom of the jacket/jumper as well.

I just have my business logo (which is a tree, for reasons I won't go into) and my business name, on the front. I don't have anything on the back. I don't like having my own name on things (I don't even like writing it on a sticky label when I go on courses :o).

"Riding Instructor" is a bit outdated I think. Everyone seems to call themselves "coaches" nowadays.

I'd love to know how much you charge per hour and how many hours you work to be paying 50% tax :eek:

Its not 50% tax, they have stung me for student loan repayments as well as my freelance work has pushed me into a new band and so the payments O make each month from my salaried earnings were not enough. It is correct so no worries there about new accountant. Was just a shock.

I was looking at personalised as i like the splash polo shorts and they offer it for free so I thought seemed silly not to. Special offer of an additonal 30% of ends monday so will keep thinking.

Double check with your accountant whether clothing is an allowable deduction for tax purposes- I think it can be a bit of a grey area.

I know protective equipment is OK but with clothes there is the argument that they would be worn anyway. Not sure if that is the case with clothes personalised for work though as you could argue it's a form of advertising too. I'm by no means a tax expert though- only part way through exams!
