Hi,

I have just bought myself a yearling filly IDxWB but she is riddled with lice eggs, I havent seen any live ones just loads of eggs.

I have started treating it with the lice powder but not sure how good the powder actually is.

What else could I use? Is there a wash or anything else that isnt going to break the bank.

Thanks

It seems like quite a bad problem at the moment around our area too.

I am treating her with panacur 5 day course at the moment, would giving her the Ivermectin paste as well be too much?

I honestly cant remember the name of it as it was a friend that gave it to me but its in a gold tin if that helps lol.

Gold Label probably, its a repellent, not much use tbh. Look for one that actually says it kills the lice, usually they say not to use on the animal directly, but you can, its something to do with the licensing as to why they say you cant.

would it still work even if I havent seen any live ones? only the eggs?

Bath in insecticidal shampoo (use whole bottle) thenCoopers fly repellant. Two applications two weeks apart should do the trick. If they still persist, use deosect.

Thanks. I will get some today hopefully.

I get flypor (permetherin) from Kessock. ;)

run along top line from ears to top of tail and repeat in 2 weeks.

You could also use spot on, but it has been known to burn some horses skin as it is quite harsh compared to the flypor.

Now if I was to get this from kessock, would I put it on after bathing her??

Coopers fly repellant plus - amazing results. (didn't need the deosect)
Found lice powder didn't work.

Invermectin is only usful for sucking lice so if you can see them you may be over doing it.

Thanks for that. I havent seen any live ones yet. So think it would be too much. x

Ive just recently got rid of the lice my horse had! she was riddled too.
I used the coopers spot on which got rid of alot of them, and then 2 weeks later I used deosect which seems to have got rid of the rest.
The Ivermectin will only work if they are the biting type of lice. There are two types, one type that is the biting/bloodsucking and the other which feeds off the dead skin.

You can also get Neem Oil, which is an anti parasitic (among other things) and this can also be used as a repellant for when you do get rid of them!
Be warned though, its a bit stinky!

Good Luck! :)

I noticed my 2 year old had them a few weeks ago, she is out with 5 others some of which were quite scabby so assume they all had them. Got some deosect and sprayed and sponged them all, you could see loads of lice coming up dead, she was covered in them. Treated them 14 days later and no lice were visible. She still has eggs attached behind her ears but I think they must be dead as they should have hatched by now. Going to go at her with a nit comb and sponge her with deosect again next weekend. Def recommend the stuff.

Instead of bathing I find Hydrophane Farmyard Louse Powder very effective.
Just brush it through the coat. Check on the tub label that it kills on contact with the pony as some is only suitable for rugs etc,
I also swear by Coopers Plus.
As advised by other posters you wil have to repeat treatments as eggs hatch.
