Hi, i bought a pessoa a few weeks ago and slowly introduced it to my young horse...he had a bit of a wobbler at first but he is fine in it now

i was just wondering what is a reasonable length of time to lunge him in it? I have been slowly building up time spent in trot and not done much canter...i would say he probably does 5-10 mins on each rein twice-three times a week at mo and manages that fine, but as he is young (5) i dont want to over work him on it...just thoughts and suggestions and how others use it would be great....cheers

20 mins should be sufficient. I presume you are working him on the 'long and low' setting. Worked wonders with my TB who needed to build a strong topline

Sounds like you are doing it about right

.

Dizz is six, DWB. She's on a fitness programme and we're on about twelve minutes in trot each way. It's increased by one minute each way each week. Usually on it three times a week.

As time goes by you'll be able to shorten the ropes, increasing the take up on the contact. As above, long and low - my back man says to take the end to the bottom side ring on the roller rather than the one on the bottom of the roller (between the front legs). Also, don't canter until horse is well established (i.e. in terms of weeks).

I have just got one and do 20 mins max with it. I do 5 mins on each rein to warm up on the long and low setting. Then I put it up to the 'competition' setting for about 3 mins on each rein, then back down to long and low to warm down. That's in walk and trot.

I do it for 20 minutes about 3 times a week on the long and low setting. We have been using it for about a month now but haven't progressed to canter yet as he still isn't 100% with his balance. We are also using it to build up muscle on 1 side so working him in the trot is more effective for this I'm told.
