I bought one a few years ago, only just started to use it in the last couple of weeks or so (was recomended to use one by the back lady last time she came out), never been struck on them ...hence never actually used it until this year (in your wondering I only started to use this year because he was turned away last year, hence now doing lunge work before eventually progessing to ridden work.).
Anyway, I can safely say, I don't like them.
I've always thought they looked like an instrument of torture, but remained optimistic, obviously they work and are of great benefit in developing the back muscles otherwise people woudnt use them I know. But, although it gets him working in the way which will I know in time will help improve his back, I don't think it does them any favours else where, as in the mouth and they way they carry themselves up front.
I don't know if its just me but they just seem so fixed? into a position that looks rather mechanical looking? and I don't really think a horse can express himself (or you can pick up) if there going along comfortably or not, I duno Im just not overly convinced.
Has anyone ever noticed that sometimes you can tell a horse when being ridden that it spends most of its time in a pesso on a lunge? I some of you could pick them out in a dressage warm up ring.
Anyway its back in the tack room collecting dust.
I since tried my de gogue, again something I've had for ages and never used but what a difference, a clear difference (when I say this I dont non of that pretty outline rubbish) I mean he seemed comfortable and happy, at the same time you can see what is going on because there seems to be more freedom in the movement in the neck/shoulders.
What I like about this which is what I didnt like about the pessoa is, if there not going correctly or there is difference to how your horse goes on one rein than the other you can tell, he also seemed much more willing to go forward, the bit remained still (no jabbing) and all its seemed to be doing was not allowing him to hollow (when I say this I dont mean it in a drastic sense) its only very slight (I'm not talking giraffe mode).
Im not knocking the pessoa, its just that I found something else that seems to work better for my horses needs and they way he goes etc and I wondered if anyone else has come across this or just other peoples views.
