Hi, quick pessoa question, I have never used one before and was wondering whether you had to be quite experienced with it before using one? Are they good for using on horses to help build them up and make their back muscles stronger? I was thinking of buying one but am worried I'd do more harm than good with it!

As long as you build your horse up very slowly on it, starting from the lowest position and don't tie in too tight then you'll be fine. The damage is done when people use them in a way that they weren't intended (as with most things) they pull the horse in too tight, which in my opinion defeats the object and they work them for far too long.
the manufactures state that they shouldn't be used for more than 20mins at a time. I have one and stick to the guidlines and I love it.

I like them, but if you are in any way unsure, i would seek help to help you fit it and use it the first time. I'm also a big fan of a harbridge for lunging in

They are great, and quite easy to use. I was advised not to work the canter straight away, start to build the muscles up in walk and trot first. Don't know how relevant that is though.
Also another point to add, dont put the back end bit (sorry don't know the correct term!) on until you are in the arena. Some horses really dont like the feeling at first and can panic. It''s best just to make sure that you can get out of the way safely!
We used one all the time where i used to work and it was great for building muscle and strength over the horse back and you can start to feel the difference when ridden after quite a short period of time.

I used one for the first time today

luckily my horse is experienced with it so didn't mind me faffing around!! It was actually easier to put on and use than i thought it would be, and the benefits are obvious- i could see him work more from behind when working low and step under a bit more.
