When using one for the first time on a horse, is it better to attach to the side rings on a cavesson or go straight to the bit?

I've used it on three of my horses; all different breeds, sizes and temperaments for different needs.
I put the side rings on the bit for all of them on their first time. I think unless your horse has a very sensitive mouth then it shouldn't be a problem as long as you start off with the pessoa ropes slack and then tighten them as your horse gets used to it.

I went straight to the bit too. Just started off loose and tightened it as he got used to it.
