PET PASSPORTS

First I've heard of it, certainly not seen anything in the dog press. Being old enough to remember when we had a rabies scare in this country in the 60s the thought of it happening again is scary. I do suspect some dogs do get smuggled in without passports nowadays, but generally the current scheme seems to be working. Like most things, I suspect if restrictions are eased it won't be the responsible dog owners, breeders and exhibitors who take short cuts but the people who think they are above the law.

First I've heard but I will ask around, I know a lot of people who compete in and take females to the continent

FFS another case of us curtailing to EU pressure. It's not just rabies that is a concern (though this is a serious concern), these tick can also carry other diseases that could affect other animals (equines) etc... I can just imagine the average holiday maker with a tin of bob martin now...................

What annoys me is that this would NEVER be permitted/encouraged in a reverse direction.

As a matter of interest, my dog had a pet passport in 2003 and we took her to France, where she picked up the mother and father of all ticks. I hadn't had to deal with one before so we had to find a French vet to remove it, and whilst there, they had leaflets and posters all over the place about toxoplasmosis. I was worried for quite a while in case she developed symptoms, but fortunately all was well.

It has put me off taking my dogs abroad again, but she really did appreciate swimming in the warm sea in the Vendée.

Sorry PS, yes it is permitted! The current regulation only applies to dogs ENTERING the UK, not exiting!

All this means is that the UK has to reapply for the derogation as far as I can see, and since the UK remains disease-free I would have thought there would still be a good case for keeping it.
