Has anyone had exclusions for vet's fees removed?
Just had my renewal letter and have several exclusions added.
One I can understand but there are others that make no sense.
I've spoken to pet plan and they are looking in to it, it seems like any body part the vet mentions in passing is automatically excluded now.
 
Kbis did this with me. Minor one off incidents like a hawthorn in a hoof got me an exclusion on that foot ! It seemed that every sneeze and f@rt got us an exclusion. Cancelled with them in the end and now with NFU.
 
Yes I'm with Pet Plan and each year I go through the exclusions and try to get most of them off.
I have been successful with some but not others (mainly ones I didn't think they would remove anyway). You need to be very vigilant with these things unfortunately.
 
I had a renewal a few years ago & there were several exclusions on the policy. I knew about one exclusion but the others were a mystery to me. I contacted my vet & got a print out of the history for my horse. With the history in front of me I contacted the insurance company, I think it was KBIS & I challenged them over the exclusions. They were very reasonable & I got 3 of the 4 exclusions removed without difficulty. After the phone call I sent them a copy of the medical history & it was all sorted & exclusions gone.

Contact the company, have a copy of your horse's history in front of you & challenge the exclusions that you feel are totally unfair i.e. a cut that has healed & will not reoccur. Colic is something totally different.
 
It's good to know that some of you have been successful with getting Petplan to remove exclusions as it's something I keep meaning to do. I've had my horse for four years now, insured with PP the whole time, and they still haven't removed exclusions they put on when he was first vetted. But then I haven't asked yet. One of them is an exclusion for anything happening to his whole left foreleg just because he has a slight club foot that he was born with and that hasn't caused him any problems. Think I'l be asking to have that one taken off the list.
 
This is really interesting and definitely something I am going to look into when I have to renew. Vets diagnosed PSD in my boy (although I am still not convinced - but that is a different story!) and insurance have now excluded all legs, back, spine and neck :O was going to stop bothering with insurance and put the money into a separate account to help with costs, should they arise but I think I will try and get at least some of the exclusions taken off first.
 
petplan excluded Frank's genitals and his teeth.
there has never been anything wrong with his teeth.
apparently the codes are quite similar so they just plumped for both (the teeth one was immediately removed when questioned.)

You see that I can understand with PSD issues I would at least expect hind legs and back/neck to be included. Front legs maybe not.
 
My horse has had a claim for a bone spur in his coffin joint in his front right hoof. He is now excluded for any bone spurs that might occur anywhere else in his body! do you think I could get that exclusion removed?

If you have all that excluded on your insurance I wouldn't bother insuring because what is there left to be covered that isn't mentioned? :(
Try to get some exclusions removed, but they won't do it unless you have some ammunition.
 
I have challenged the wording of one sucessfully, after discussion Petplan amended the wording from 'all skin conditions' to 'sweet itch'
 
Gosh, I have not re-insured with Shearwater, because Jay now has his off fore discounted due to suspensory issue. That is his only exclusion though, which would seem fair. I just think that is the most likely part to now go wrong, so we are saving into an account instead.

If Pet Plan are excluding many things that have a tenuous link then I would certainly not stay with them.

How difficult would it be to change companies? I think with Shearwater anything under 4K does not need a vetting. They paid out for treatment fine. The people in the office were also knowledgeable.

Exactly my thoughts! Not a lot of my horse left to insure now :( The PSD was only diagnosed on the left side and no issues were detected anywhere else with xrays so whilst I can understand they may not want to insure his legs perhaps, I can't understand why they have excluded all those parts other than the fact the insurance claim would have included the costs for said xrays... It's worth a try at renewal time before I give up insuring him.
 
Yes I got an exclusion removed with Petplan after my pony got a very mild bout of colic but after they put 10 exclusions on the TB's policy I cancelled the policy and now put money away each month for her. I find they are great for dog insurance, but not the best for horse insurance. The pony is still insured with them though
 
Jake diagnosed with wobblers when he was 2.. They tried to exclude, back, neck, ataxia, any muscle problems, neurological conditions, all legs and scrapes/cuts/falls. The woman was stumped when I asked what he was actually now insured for.

Pointed out that his was very low grade (symptoms could pose as growing too fast if we had not x-rayed for compression), that the vet did a report when he was 4yo and it said that he has no physical signs, and that he has never had a vet call out to anything related to Wobblers.

They have now changed it to just ataxia (understandable, and in my eyes this would usually mean end of the road for him unfortunately).
 
I got a comic exclusion removed after 18 months. Horse was never operated on and they finally had someone look at the account that could see it was medicinally induced and not spontaneous!
 
I didn't bother with petplan in the end. I had got a quote and accepted it then had to send in the vetting. They didn't respond for a month so i phoned to ask what was happening. They told me they were still looking into it. I phoned again in another month and still nothing. Then i got the exclusions. They had eliminated his back legs because the vet said his pasterns sloped a bit too much, all of his skin because of two marks that were skin defects and another leg due to an injury. Phoned and complained they said they would get back to me. Heard nothing again for a month so phoned back this time to cancel no matter what they said. I got told they had removed the exclusions but no longer cared and cancelled. Bad customer service doesn't get my money.

With kbis now and although they have excluded two parts of his legs because of injuries I was willing to accept that as it does that the exclusion is only for that type of injury again. Will get it removed next year if he manages to stay out of trouble (doubt it).
