NBC who are covering the Olympics in the USA have a PETA ad prominently placed on their home page. There is a small PETA base in the UK and I hope with all my heart they NEVER get a stronghold there like they have in the USA.

I have written to NBC to express my disgust that they have supported such an extremist eco-terrorist organisation in this way. Without horse racing (Kentucky Derby & Preakness), Rolex Kentucky, WEG, general Horse racing, all exclusive to NBC, plus excluisve rights too on dog shows such as Westminster the tv network would be down a huge proportion of viewers, not to mention the commerical advertising that accompanies these events.

If PETA had their way non of us would ride a horse, breed from a mare, keep a dog, breed a litter. And as I pointed out to NBC they would ban golfers, NFL, Baseball, Tennis players, and NASCAR drivers from even wearing leather shoes!

I don't think they are that bad

They are providing legal help to the German charity that rescued the Russian horses being ridden across Europe...

Steady on ! Certainly no mention of horse breeding, dog owning or wearing leather on their UK site.
A lot of their campaigns focus on the fur trade, which to me is entirely justified - particularly their campaign focusing on China which has a shocking record of animal cruelty across the board. The leather issue would appear to focus on India and the mistreatment of the cows that provide a lot of the Uk's cheaper leather goods, which is fair enough. Also the Bull Running in Spain, which you have to argue is pretty pointless as well. As well as campaigns for cruelty to street entertainment animals such as bears and monkeys - again, fair enough, surely? And they're big on vegetarianism, so what ? Doesn't bother me. I like sausages. Mmmm. Sausages.

Maybe not on their UK site but they list their main aim as " total animal liberation. This means no meat, no milk, no zoos, no circuses, no wool, no leather, no hunting, no fishing, and no pets (not even seeing-eye dogs). "
This is an interesting website PETA kills animals

And they are trying to ban pedigree dog breeding, breeding of pedigree horses, riding and competing on or with horses, dog shows. Darn near succeeding is banning dog breeding in some city limits in the USA putting pressure on local governments for a no exception spay / neuter policy.

Of course they are going to give financial aid to high profile "needs" cases such as the Russian horses. BUT they also have an all euthanaise policy regarding stray animals. No rehoming as they do not believe dogs, cats, etc should ever be kept as pets.

They openly admit they euthanaise rather than rehome. Direct quote from PETA < PETA is against the no kill movement and euthanizes the majority of animals that are given to them > !!!

<Plice and FDA investigation - PETA was criticized in 2005 when police discovered that at least 80 animals had been euthanized and left in area dumpsters over the course of a month. Two PETA employees approached a dumpster in a van registered to PETA and left behind 18 dead animals. Thirteen more were found inside the van. The animals had been euthanized by the PETA employees immediately after taking them from shelters in Northampton and Bertie counties >

In a 2 yr period (2005 - 2006 roughly) they took in approx 20,000 homeless animals, some direct from veterinarians, some from shelters to "rehome". Instead not counting the 5,500 that owners thankfully managed to trace and reclaim as strays, PETA euthanaised all but 400 of them claimng the rest unsuitable for rehoming.

If it was up to them you have no pets, no livestock on farms, would be a total vegan, wear plastic shoes (so who is so eco friendly now?), never ride or drive a horse, there would be no dressgae, show jumping, racing, endurance, TREC, showing, etc, etc.

We thought the the pressure would never be enough to ban fax hunting in the UK but is was in the end. Be warned in the not too distant future if we do not act now and wake up we may be reduced to watching old dvd's of the last ever Badminton, Burghley, Hickstead, WEG, etc and equestrainism will fade into just a memory of sport of a bygone era.

These are the idiots who decided to attempt to 'liberate' some dressage horses when I worked in the USA.
Because they were 'cruelly confined' some total grungy airhead IDIOT decided that like man he would like free them.
Oh yes, opening the doors on a half dozen Hannoverians who have been treated like royalty from birth and frankly have a whinge if it starts to rain for a nano second when they are out in their indivdualised, double-fenced, specially arranged for socialising, paddocks, that's very compassionate.
Only God and a security guy with attitude stopped them just being killed on the roads.
I would like to tell you what we all thought PETA should stand for, but it wouldn't be polite in mixed company.
Like the idiots who got hunting banned, they have no idea, absolutley no idea. The scary thing is it's people like that running this country.
Be afraid ....

" total animal liberation. This means no meat, no milk, no zoos, no circuses, no wool, no leather, no hunting, no fishing, and no pets (not even seeing-eye dogs). "

Have looked on peta.com at their mission statement, it reads :

"People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), with more than 2.0 million members and supporters, is the largest animal rights organization in the world."

"PETA focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: on factory farms, in laboratories, in the clothing trade, and in the entertainment industry. We also work on a variety of other issues, including the cruel killing of beavers, birds and other "pests," and the abuse of backyard dogs. "

"PETA works through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaigns."

The initial reason for your post was about an ad about the chinese fur trade, which to me is entirely justified. The ad featured an Olympic athlete protesting about fur. This is not a 'foothold'. Don't get hysterical.
The rights and wrongs of PETA belong on a different thread.

Boy, now who's getting hysterical?
Thread Police?
The OP is entitled to her opinion, and so am I and so are you. I don't think there are strict rules concerning a little digression, looking around, do you?

Hysterical equifun - read a post thoroughly before flaming someone elses. The whole point was made that if PETA get a stronghold on sporting events like the Olympics their next aim will be the actual events involving equines.

Yes it may be about the fur trade in China - although NOTHING is mentioned aiming it at that on the ad - read it. They have anti-fur campaigns in nearly every country they can get their nast little paws into.

There are also alot of other FANTASTIC organisations like WSPA who also are anti fur, anti animal cruelty, etc who do NOT as PETA does advocate the whole banning of breeding pedigree animals, keeping pets, the absolving of all sports involving animals.

If PETA get their way you will have NO HORSES TO RIDE, NO DOGS OR CATS AS PETS, NO EQUINE SPORT.

YES this topic DOES belong on an equine forum.

Oh sorry - maybe you would be one of the not so unhappy bunch when we have no eventing, no sj, no dressage, no racing, NO OLYMPIC EQUESTRIAN EVETNS and you were probably glad when fox hunting was banned too.

Please do not assume you know what i believe in or what i support.

And they are the F**kwits supporting no equine slaughterhouses in the US......... I vary between feeling impotent with frustration at their self serving superiority to extreme rage at their total lack of understanding of the very real need for governed slaughterhouses to dispose of the ubiquitous detritus of the horse world every day, week, month, year......

The ad which YOU so obviously agree with had NOTHING to do with the CHINESE fur trade alone - the ad has aired for years in the USA, Germany, UK using different models or celebs each time. It is PETA's general stance on fur / animals / the right to pet ownership / the right to ride horses, etc. and the fact that NBC choose to showcase a PETA ad while covering the Olympic equine events that PETA would have banned in a heartbeat.

It's is akin to supporting the League Against Cruel Sports and Hunt Sabs to say that PETA's advertising in NBC's Olympic coverage is acceptable. Because at each commercial break on NBC it wil be on. It is an insult to those equestrians from all nations given PETA's hell bent determination to eventually do away with the sport most of us love so much.

Thank you GoneToFrance. PETA is responsible as you say for the 10's of thousands of horses now who making the journey from the USA to Mexico in cramped, agonising conditions only to be literally stabbed to death by the barabric Mexican slaughterhouse system. They got their way and shut down all the US slaughterhouses - so now - how many poor equine souls are they now trying to save on the trucks heading out to Mexico - NOT ONE!

Why? The OP has the absolute right to question the rights and wrongs on this thread and so does everyone else.

Personally, if PETA can get behind a ban on slaughter that has caused thousands of american horses to suffer long journeys in horrendous conditions to an inhumane death in Mexico, I, for one, would question their ethics.
