Petition for tv advert about horses/roads

Thanks for sharing this. We need at least 10,000 signatures for it to be worthwhile so everyone please sign and share! X

An ad is a great idea but the one shown here is not going to help, it shows riders 2 abreast making no effort to let the impatient, unsurprisingly, driver pass, yes it has an impact about the damage that can be caused to the car and horse but I am not sure it will really get the right message across if the riders are not acting in a responsible way. A horse overeacting to a car in that way is just what antihorse people make such a fuss about, if it showed one spooking at a leaf in the hedge and swinging out it would be better and more realistic than a horse dancing about with a car driving up behind it before it over revs or uses the horn.

Signed but I have to agree with Be Positive - not the best advert to get drivers to be sympathetic towards riders at all. Like most things Government lead, it will have been produced by someone who has no experience whatsoever in the topic... Madness but just how it goes for some reason!

I think having a driver passing a well mannered horse with the rider thanking them for slowing down would be preferable to get drivers on side, drivers do not always think but I have had comments about how good manners from horse and rider make drivers think positively rather than the ones who have no control making drivers p***d off. A combination of good and bad would be better as most horses on the roads should walk quietly with a car coming, if they cannot in normal traffic then in my view they should not be there.

I agree - once that advert is seen on TV by people I can just imagine the comments now made by Daily Mail commenters once they do a story on it (no doubt they will). They will be saying that the riders were in the wrong etc and the whole advert will have an opposite effect of what it was trying to achieve. I hope I'm wrong but that's just the way it looks like to an outsider (showed that video to a work mate who is non-horsey and she said she doesn't know why they didn't move out the way). The advert is aimed at non horsey people, therefore it needs to encourage them to treat riders and horses with respect, not show them that horse riders don't offer the same respect back!

Exactly, it really shows riders in a poor light, if my horse behaved like that I would not be happy, interesting in your work mates view there was no reason to not just go into single file, problem solved, car driver happily on his way without getting wound up, he did slow down sensibly when he saw the horses he ws not trying to overtake at speed.

Have to agree with a bad use of advert. I watched it couple days ago and my first thoughts were how arrogant rides came over . 2 abrest and no effort to move over or get to spot for car to pass. poor advert.

these e petitions are great, but when have you known one succeed or make much/any difference?
i have signed it as there is nothing to lose, so let's keep everything crossed.

i do feel though that, as mentioned, this is far from the best advert to use.

I haven't signed. I agree with be positive in that the advert shown just highlights everything that drivers dislike about horses, and won't do any favours at all.

We agree and want a new advert that is more up to date and accurate. The current one is still a step forward and has been seen on channel five at 5 oclockish in recent weeks but we still think there needs to be a more emotive one. By signing you are voting towards a New advert.

I would love to sign but not happy that my address is needed?

Your address is only for making sure you actually live in the uk as you're not allowed to vote if you live outside it. This is because it's official government petitions.

You can put another address in it as long as it is in the uk.

I would love an advert that explained how horses might react. Eg - Most horses that are on the road are good in traffic - or learning how to be by following a horse who is already confident. But horses can be scared of things that you might not anticipate - a plastic bag rustling in the breeze, a person suddenly emerging from a garage, a dog barking from behind a fence, or sometimes even the coloured lines or drains on the road! So be considerate when passing - no matter how well trained the horse, and how hard the rider tries, they are still unpredictable. (With some images of reactions to these things, and finishing with a courteous driver getting a big thank you from the rider)

A new one sounds good - as others have said with the riders showing a bit more consideration as well as how un-predictable they can be

This is why I have not signed, I think it gives out a bad message and I would not be happy if my horse behaved like that at every car that slowed up behind him.

Ahh OK, I will sign it then
