Hi - I hope this hasn't already been done, but please sign this petition - it affects us all!

Basically, "The proposed code will forbid riding two horses abreast on narrow and busy roads and when riding around bends. It will also exclude horses from all cycle tracks. " More info into the proposed changes and how it will affect horse riders can be found on the website.
Please sign by August 13th.

Thanks

Petition - horses and the highway code

If I'm wrong, I stand to be corrected and have already signed the petition.

However, as I understand it the amendment is to the Highway Code, which is simply is a code of good practice and says " You should not ride two abreast".

This is not a change in the Road Traffic or Highways Act and until they start dishing out fixed penalty tickets for riding two abreast I'll continue to so so where it is safe and advise anyone else to do the same.

I really don't know why people are panicking about this. The only thing you may find is that if a car comes round a blind bend and smacks you up the arse whilst riding two abreast then you may get sued but you shouldn't be two abreast round a blind bend anyway so what's all the fuss about or have I missed something!! AAARGH!

And also, a driver should only proceed at a speed which allows them to pull up within the distance they can see.

If you are hacking along a narrow twisty lane which cannot accomodate a car and horse side by side safely then why would it make you any safer riding in single file ?

The changes will apply to all roads. If you have to lead a pony to a field on horseback, or a riding centre taking youngsters out on a lead reign where does this leave you ?

The onus should remain with the car drivers on this one to drive in a manner which is considerate to those more vulnerable on the roads.
