Both mine are insured with Petplan and yes they are good. They have recently made worthwhile changes to their policies as well which is of particular interest if people have older horses or are planning on keeping horses for life and not for selling on/project horses.
The changes they have made is that any horse insured with them before the horse's 20th birthday will continue to receive the full benefits of insurance to their 25th birthday.
Previously if an older horse was insured with them then if the horse was insured with Petplan before it was 17 it would receive full benefits until 20 when it would be transfered to a veteran policy which doesn't cover illness just injuries.
The company is also giving existing clients with horses on a veteran policy aged between 17 and 24 and whose policy commenced prior to 1st June 2007 the option to upgrade to full benefits (injury and illness cover) at cost.
Very good in my honest opinion and although Petplan are a little more expensive than some other companies I think their policy is very fair and certainly very good for people with older horses still in competition or very regular work.
Caz
Was with PP, til they got too expensive! Now have 2 with SEIB, one with NFU. Both SEIB and NFU have paid out brilliantly on claims.
Tbh the only one I've ever heard REALLY bad reports of are E&L
PP have paid out well for me but I wish I hadn't taken out the policy with the £500 excess as I've had to claim 3 times for the same horse.
However, with my other horse I didn't have to claim for vet fees at all so gained there with the lower premiun. It's all a lottery but I would now go for the best policy with the lowest excess.
My friend is with Petplan and has had really difficult problems getting them to pay out and they have made some really unreasonable requests (such as wanting all his past veterinary history even before they bought him and they'd had him a while!), and the latest is the vet recomended sending him for a bone scan and they agreed to pay, but only if it found something wrong!! I think that is totally ridiculous! But apparently not uncommon according to what I've heard.
I'm with NFU. They have always been great. I got a quote from Petplan and it was much more expensive.
like any insurance compnay they will get out of paying if they can. They were great paying out at first with Dan but refused to pay out the last and biggest payment because treatment was 3 days outside year the treatment was delayed due to a government licence for the drug being used, there was nothing we could have done to expediate it, and despite letters from left right and centre they wouldn't pay out! thankgod i had a credit card is all I can say.
I've used them and claimed from them, I was pleased other than one point which really p1ssed me off big time.
My mare did a tendon although it was very slight so she had to go to horspital for loads of investigations inc MRI. The bill topped over £3k. I asked PP to pay them direct, it took them 3 months and then I got a phonecall from the hospital to say there was still an outstanding balance, even though they'd received the settlement. Turns out my hospital put a little caviat on their invoices saying if you pay within 7 days of invoice date you get 7% off your bill, so they had subtracted this amount from the settlement.
Their initial argument with me was that 'for all we know you could have got that discount' - er no I couldn't have since you paid them direct and it took you three months! They then changed their tune and said from their point of view it shows that the hospital are willing to accept a lower amount for the work and that they would only pay what they believed would be acceptable to the practise.
Bottom line is that I had to pay that 7% which was over £200 and I was not pleased at all
I renewed with them as they had the best policy and NFU didn't want her as she is 16. She recently broke her leg so I'll tell you if I change my opinion of them once this claim is submitted! This time I have paid the bill myself and will get them to pay me, at least this way I do get the discount and I won't lose out.
I'm with Petplan - and about 2 months after i bought my horse i claimed - i had a high excess (doh) but they paid out without any fuss
I can't fault them from my experience - they even sent me letters a few months in advance of when i wouldn't be able to claim again (you know you have a year from the injury to claim for veterinary costs)
I have both my boys insured with them, plus my cat & have the high (£500) excess with the 2 horses. They have been fantastic. I have had a very bad year & they have paid out promply on my claims, both on Spider & also on my cat.
All 3 dogs and one horse insured with them (Hads is too old at 29). Have made several claims for both equine and canines and they have always paid out with no problems whatsoever. However, they are quite expensive.
I use SEIB at present, but they've quoted me double the price I paid last year, for the same cover on a pony worth just 500 pounds more. So I was pretty peeved at that.
i'd go for the max vet fees as you're lucky to get a basic colic op for £5K - my friends mare had an abcess stuck to her small intestine recently - basic colic surgery and recovery - her bill is close to £7k now. Another friends horse has an eye abcess and over the year (lots of antibiotics) the bill is up to the limit of £5k.
I'd get lots of quotes and read the small print of every policy - pet plan, NFU, SEIB, KBIS, Shearwater etc
Petplan have paid me out thousands over the last couple of years and they have never quibbled over anything. However in my personal opinion their admin sucks. I have had too numerous to mention problems with them, with things being taken on and off insurance incorrectly etc. As with anything check and double check your paperwork!
Ive been with them for years and made several big claims and have never had any probs, also have my cats with them and also had a couple of biggish claims without a prob
I just moved my insurance to Petplan from (ahem) E&L, and the premiums are £10 less than I was paying with E&L! I pay £35 per month for both. I know that NFU are very good at paying out on claims.
Prilly I did the same with Mcfly as he was with E & L but they did something that really angered me so I switched. In my case it cost more to insure with Petplan though, but I don't mind.
I currently pay just over £63 a month for both my lads.
Cat was with them & I claimed £4,500 for a barbed wire incident, the best part of £5k for the crohn's disease & the full insured amount when we lost him.
Their admin is poo. They took AGES to pay the death claim. On the one hand I needed the money for a new horse but on the other it REALLY upset me every time I had to ring them. Sounds stupid but it made me feel mercenary to be chasing mere money when Cat had died. I ended up upset for the rest of the day every time I rang them.
Getting Adrian insured was a nightmare cos they lost THREE dd forms despite being in their paid envelopes & I ended up having to pay for a stupid mortality cert cos my 5 stage was by then more than 30 days old. Can't tell you how cross I was over that.
