I lent my Isuzu Trooper to a friend, I told them in was on empty, he put petrol in by mistake, drove for 3 miles and wondered why it wouldnt start again. Anybody with any knowledge of this? He is going to drain the tank but what damage do you think might have been done to the engine? I am beside myself with anger as you might imagine. Any Ideas welcome to put my mind at rest, or not!

Petrol in a diesel actually isn't too bad (i've done it twice  ) you need to drain the tank and then add a lubricant (you can buy one from most garages) and hand pump everything through (or this is how it was described to me by the mechanics!) It ost about £250 for a garage to sort it out

How old is the Trooper? I'm guessing it is quite old so hopefully the damage will not be massive. In a modern diesel injection engine it would be completely buggered in every way. There will be significant damage but hopefully not quite so bad.

I used to laugh like mad about people that do this, until I did it at 5.30am on my way to a show! The less distance you drive, the better I was told. I had my tank drained and a replacement fuel filter if I remember rightly. Cost about £150 and no permanant damage done in my case.

Oh dear. I did this too. Put petrol into my Kia Sorrento (doh!). I had to have the car people pick me up and than drain my tank and it cost around £260. Plus the annoying thing was i lost all my diesel which we know is not cheap.

Unless he is a mechanic, I cannot see him doing this himself. When I spoke to some garages (for quotes) they said it would cost hundreds and I had damaged my car etc etc but it's working fine and the garage I had it done at said they were taking the p6ss out of me and worrying me for nothingThe garage that did it, said no worries, it happens all the time. The sooner it's sorted the quicker (i.e less damage) and it's not a massive deal.

Its a 2000 so W reg is that old enough?

2000 might well be ok, depends on whether it is an injector system or traditional basic engine. Fingers crossed it is the latter!!!! Don't let him do anything himself, get it to a decent garage.

Thank you, I dont know what I would have done without you lot this evening. I feel less livid, I was giving up wine until this happened, just had to open a bottle! The worst of it is that I have sold it and it is to be collected next weekend, so I did the WRONG thing and lent it to someone to just pick up a few sheep with the trailer.

It has an injector system, it has had 2 recalls because this model had problems with the injectors, so they must be vulnerable. I am now back to being livid.

Gosh, Im so lucky with my Maverick, I just filled it to the top with diesel and it was absolutely fine, in fact runs better because it burnt all the cr*p out of the engine ( I only put a tenner in but I ran it about 6 miles including stopping at the yard then followed it with £70 in diesel, I realised what I had done because it was running so rough and smoking like hell). If I were you I would just have it drained and refill with diesel and forget about it. It may run rough for a few days so keep running it til it clears all the petrol through but once it has I'm sure no one will ever know!

Thank you all so much for your replys, you have all been so helpful. I shall let you know the outcome!!! On the 3rd wine now.

I did this in my 2004 Passat estate, I didn't drive it as I realised straight away at the pump ... I'd put about £40 by the time I realised  the petrol pump lady said that she wasn't allowed to advise me anything other than to not move it and call a mechanic but if it was her she would top it up to the top of the tank with deisel (about another £20) ignore the smoke and noise and hope for the best!!

She said after that to fill it up each day with more deisel as soon as there was room in the tank - I did and the car survived!

xx

Are you a member of the AA? I did the same. They recovered my car and by the time we got home another AA guy was waiting on my driveway to drain down the engine. It cost over £100 but less than £200, sorry can't remember, nearer £100.00 and the car was fine afterwards.

Thank you Archiesmummy, I have just heard that they have been able to start the engine which is a good sign, I think. 4th glass of wine now!!!

My hubby did this in his ford transit, lucky it conk out at home,he only noticed it by looking at the recipt, all he did was drain the tank and put new fuel filters on cost £30 (plus my bmw got the £50 quids worth of petrol) thanks love ha ha .

I have done this for years, including in my old tropper it was a "w" currently i do it with my shogunm i put up to a tenner of petrol in first then fill the tank with desil. cleans out the system, including the injectors, both mine have run fine with no starting or smoking problems, id just fill it full with desil, good luck

Haven't read the whole thread and all the answers but I will tell you that my OH did this a few years ago with our Mitsubishi L200.

The engine had to be completely rebuilt and it cost about £6000 !!!! Thankfully insured with NFU and they paid the bill including a courtesy car for me for about 5 week.

I really hope yours isn't this bad!

I remember this happenig to me.I had only just got a diesel vehicle and was taking a load of Goats to the Lambourne show.I stopped at a garage about ten miles from the showground as I was low in fuel and knew there wasn't another one till I came back.I filled it with diesel instead and as the garage suggested rang the RAC.An hour later they arrived only to tell me just to fill the rest of the tank with diesel....why on earth didn't they tell me that on the phone when I would've still be in time for the show and not missed my classes!!!!!!!!!!!

omfg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The damage is to the diesel pump as it is lubricated by the diesel. I was advised by a diesel specialist to add paraffin to diesel in cold weather to stop it jelling but could add some petrol but if the tank was empty it is bad news and may nor show up for some time.

Minus the goats this is exactly what happened to me with a diesel car I had, thankfully it was ok!
