I remember having this argument with my english teacher a few years ago (he has showjumpers and was going to go to a high level until he was made to get a prober education :L)
Are horses pets or workers?
I personally belive that they are pets, but then i don't really compete or take it seriously, i just like to have fun with Buzz. What are others opinions?

Definitely pets for me, but for those highly competative then I can see why they are considered workers, they are basically earning their keep.
I think for what they cost to keep, not to mention the time and effort, its fair to expect to get something out of it, for most of us its the company, seeing your horse content and going on a happy hack, thats good enough reward x

For me, any horse I hve has to do a job - therefore they are primarily workers. They do of course become pets also over time, but i personally wouldnt keep a horse purely as a pet (may change my mind when i eventually buy some land). Most horseowners in the UK do however keep them as pets.

In agreement with the above too, my horse has to do a job. If he couldnt do it for whatever reason then he would be PTS after a short( a summer) but very pleasant retirement.
Also because he loves his job and even in this rotten winter when hes had hardly been ridden in the past 8 weeks I ve seen how miserable and purposeless his life seems in the absence of work and how he seems listless and depressed.

Mine are primarily (very expensive) "pets". Though truely they are members of the family. I couldn't choose between any of them. They are all special. Dont get me wrong, I am very practical too, but all things given my lot have a home for life.

I am not majorly competetive any more so anything I do with my lot are a bonus.

Mine is EXACTLY the same. Gets dead grumpy without work.

QR - mine is both. Partly because of the above (think it must be the draught in him) but also, rightly or wrongly, I am not into horse ownership just for the looking after them aspect. They have to do a job for me too x

Mine are all workers, they earn me some income. They are also pets. I think for most people, they are pets.

i have one pet, in my older gelding. and one worker in my mare she is my competition horse and must be fit for purpose or i would sell her (obviously illness or injury excluded) i brought her for this purpose and i have no use for 2 field ornaments. that said i still love her the same and she gets the same treatment as my boy just worked harder.
