Some of them, in my modest opinion, are very nice! I just hope that they have a happy future here in Italy

Are some of their tails docked? Or do they just cut the hair at the bottom of the bone?

I think that the tails are cut flush with the end of the dock.I believe it has something to do with safety while they are working cattle. PF would be the one to ask

Some of them are really lovely.

Do you know what the reason is for their import Mairi??

[/ QUOTE ]they come over as riding horses (hack/barrel racing, team penning etc9 and the lower end ones as meat on da hoof

. The lucky ones such as those on the first site are flown over. The unlucky ones spend 6 weeks in a ships hold and arrive in the south of Italy or Savona here in the north west. to be then trucked across Italy to various slaughter houses. The best of the worst are sometimes re cycled as riding horses. Heres a link to another site. This guy has what looks like an industrial estate and has hundreds of horses at any given time. You can pay on the 'never-never' do part exchange, try one out and if its no good you can swap or get your money back . He has 300 Argentinian horses for sale at the moment plus Spanish, Friesian, mini Shetlands and others

Mairi is correct, the tails are cut to the bottom of the dock. The ones that are hogged but have a chunk of mane left in the middle are a bit naughty.

There's a fair bit of variation in the breed isn't there! I guess thats more common with the "working" breeds. It does seem silly shipping average horses that far when there are plenty of riding horses in europe

In what way are they 'naughty?' I can remember the first influx of A horses to Italy and most had serious character issues, but then , they were destined for the meat market! I was so innocent back then and didnt know that almost all had never been handled properly and can remember clearly trying to pick out one geldings feet

. It went absolutely balistic and the gods were on my side that day-I honestly could have been killed by him. I gave up picking out their feet and walked them forever on the gravel driveway after that. There are some wonderful ones being brought over now but you could buy the Italian equiv for far less if you were prepared to look around. sadly, Argentinian, Friesian and Spanish horses are the mounts of the 'equestrian chavs' at the mo
