9.Do you know how long it takes for Bute to leave the system?
Each sachet works for up to 8 hours, I don't know how long it remains in the system

10.Do you think Bute should be illegal in competition?
If its to mask an ongoing complaint yes.

11.Should Bute be used for short-term injury only and not used as a long-term pain-relief for ridden horses?
It depends, if it makes the horse more comfortable for say mild arthritic pain and reduces inflamation then yes as horses kept in moderate work are better for it, just like people with joint pain, using it in a controlled way it better than not using it.

12. Would you prefer you use herbal remedies as an alternative to chemical medicine?
Yes if they were as effective, which they are not. Some herbal remedies can be harmful if used long term.

Other comments. My old mare who died aged 44 was on 2 Butes a day for the last years of her life. She was on 1 bute before that after being retired 8 years before she died. She had arthritis in her hocks made worse after a fall while being shod. The bute kept her happy and mobile and two years before she died her liver function was tested and she was fine.

12. Would you prefer you use herbal remedies as an alternative to chemical medicine?
Yes if they were as effective however not found any to be as effective with my horse.

Any further comments/ reasonings please add below….

i've used bute sparingly over the years, usually as an anti-inflammatory rather than as a pain reliever.
i had a horse with a fractured pedal bone years ago. operated on to remove floating bone, came sound, then started putting up new bone growth, and went dead lame instantly. vet's x-rays confirmed nothing could be done, so i took him home for a few days of spoiling before pts, armed with lots of bute to keep him comfortable. 2 twice a day didn't touch it by the 3rd day, so i gave him about 4, he was still really lame... and i took him to vets to be pts.
this proved to me that bute really isn't strong enough to mask anything if the horse is in a lot of pain, i think of it as 'equine aspirin' based on my experiences.

6.Who supplied you with the Bute?
Own Supply but vet told me to give it!! Bute is freely available in Argentina. I have some at all times just in case.

7.Who made the decision to use Bute?
Vet, but it was a bit of a no-brainer. I would've given it myself

8.Do you know the pros and cons of Bute?

10.Do you think Bute should be illegal in competition?
It IS in Argentina. I'm not sure it should be; I'm sure there are justifiable reasons for using it sometimes, but I'm equally sure it will be and IS abused.

11.Should Bute be used for short-term injury only and not used as a long-term pain-relief for ridden horses?
Yes and no. Not to make lame horses rideable in competition, for instance when otherwise they would be in a lot of pain, but yes to help arthritic/otherwise achey old horses be comfortable

12. Would you prefer you use herbal remedies as an alternative to chemical medicine?
Yes - if they worked
