.... In August my horse had colic had the vet out 3 times and on last visit they tubed him gave him electrolites and took some blood tests.

He picked up after being tubed but when bloods came back they showed a very high white cell count so as a precaution vet gave him some penicilin and did another set of bloods 2 weeks later which came back all clear and horse has been fine since.

3x out of hours call outs
various drugs
2x bloods which had to be sent to Liphook ( As in Jersey they can't test for much )

Bill circa £ 450

Sent claim form to vets and they sent off to incureance company. Got a phonecall from them tonight querying how quickly the colic came on and when I first called the vet out ??

This was all on the form and is my first claim ever !!!

Just seemed like they where trying to get at something ?? Or am I just being to over suspicious ??

Did you contact your insurers as soon as the colic started? If you read the small print, in anything other than an emergency (as the 1st colic probably was) you should contact your insurers to discuss treatment BEFORE the treatment starts. If you haven't already alerted your insurers and just slammed in a claim, then I would expect a query.

The colic started on wednesday night when the vet first came out then I had to call them again at 7am as I couldn't get him up then that night ( thursday ) he still wasn't any better so they tubed him and that seemed to do the trick

The only extra thing was the second set of bloods and that was more of a precautionary measure ??

I thought it would it be classed as one attack of colic ?

But did you contact your insurers on their 24hr emergency number (or whatever system your insurers have in place for emergencies) as soon as it was possible? If the first thing they knew about your claim was the claim form landing on their office doormat, then I'm not surprised they are making some enquiries. If you've kept them informed right from the first moment, then it should be ok. Dig your insurance documents out and read what you're supposed to do in the event of a veterinary emergency and ask yourself if you did that or not. Hope all is ok.

OOH Poop !

TBH the first two days when he had the colic I didn't even think about phoning anyone except the vet as I was beside myself with worry (I previously lost a horse to colic) and then I had to make an urgent trip to the UK so yes I probably should have called them (banging head against wall as I type)

I also have my puppy insured with the same company and when he had to go in over a weekend for an emergency op to have OH football sock removed from his intestine (still whole) I called them on the Tuesday when I got him home and they said just send in a claim form.

My horse has to have an operation on Tuesday, I rang them the day before to inform them. They said there was really no need. They have to have emergency treatment at evenings and weekends, so its not always possible to get in touch with them, their words not mine. If it was an emergency which colic is you should be ok.

They are probably trying to wriggle so beware. Insurance companies are like banks they are the enemy at the gates and should be treated with extreme caution dont trust any of them but keep after them at all times.

I have claimed a few times and never informed them, unless hospital was required. I Do usually phone them for a claim form and explain then what has happened (briefly) never had a problem. sometimes they just don't read what you write properly
