My cat had a large open wound at the base of his tail. He was taken straight to the Vet and it was cleaned up, X-rayed and stiched. He's back home now and feeling very sorry for himself, but how he injured himself is a total mystery.

Could it have been a burst absess? If he'd been bitten by another cat and it closed up it can create quite a sizeable open wounds if then bursts.
Get well soon kittycat

As millimoo says, that's a classic spot for a bite from another cat that then forms an abscess. With stoic cats, you often don't realise they have a humungus abscess anywhere until it erupts and you see the hole. With less brave cats, they will often go off their food and seem sick, depressed and feverish when an abscess is brewing. Worth checking him over for other bites x

He was a very good boy and slept on my pillow last night (very unusual for him) and he still has all his stiches. Yay! No buster collar! :D He did wake me up by washing my eyebrows, but I have forgiven him (I actually wasn't cross at all :p ) for sandpapering my face with his tongue because I'm a daft, soft twit and he's so damn sweet. ;)

I did think that it could have been an abscess, but the Vet says that it looked like a tear. I'm wondering whether he was climbing a barbed wire fence? Next door are renevating their house totally (they aren't living in it as it's being gutted) and he does go up there, so maybe he hurt himself on a nail while exploring? When we had scaffolding he did go up it, so it is possible that he was climbing next door's scaffolding. It could also have been done on a broken window pane.

Why can't he just tell me! Arrrgh!
