My horse appears to be photosensitive and has got mud fever! Vet came yesterday took bloods to check his liver function and we have antobiotics too :-( she mentioned he may benefit from from some uv boots or mud fever chaps. Any recommendations on which boots to get him. Dont really want him to sweat loads so looking for the lightest option

Hi
Shires do a turnout sock that is designed for summer use and gives UV protection. They work really well and stay in place well we used them on our little welsh. My mare suffers from photosensitivity related to liver disease. I use Ozvet sun screen instead which is water proof and only needs applying every 3 days.
Good luck with the blood results.

My boy absolutely refused to wear UV boots, even though I only tried them after he was pretty much all healed up. The key with him was spraying the buttercups to get rid of them and stopping feeding alfalfa. Since I made those two changes, he hasn't had PS again *frantically touches wood*. I do try to slap some sun cream on his legs on very hot days - if he lets me - and he wears a fly mask with nose cover.

I used equilibrium sun chaps, fly mask or muzzle guard with a field safe halter and baby sun block cream.

My mares blood/liver tests came back clear.

Upping her management in summer stopped the MF taking a hold in the winter. It took 2-3yrs to practically stop it but it was very labour intensive.

When I got her all the hair in her blaze and hind socks would fall out and her face would end up in yellow crusty sores. It was simple to improve her from that extreme but lots of micro managing/trial and error to stop it.

I don't know if they still make them but the FAL silver stable wraps really worked for my mare
