hi there cant decide whether my 5 year old is just being awkward or not, He can go off on left rein ok using his hind left leg ok but put him on the right rein he wont go off on the correct lead and just doesnt use his hind leg he isnt lame just either lazy or i wonderd if there could be anything in his back or anything else and wonderd if it is worth getting him checked by either a physio or chiro

i'd get him checked, also his saddle. if he canters fine on the right lead in the field and on the lunge, then it's very possibly saddle, or him struggling a lot to balance etc. i'd get a chiropractor rather than a physio, personally.

Get him checked. It sounds comfort related and if you keep going you might easily turn a small problem into a big one. When you've ruled out the physical get someone who knows about young horses to have a look at him. Not every problem is physical in origin but that doesn't necessarily mean the horse doesn't have a valid reason. Do yourself a favour and utilise other people's knowledge - it's cheaper and easier in the long run.

I'd get it checked. My 10yo has had a similar problem earlier in the year as a result of pulled muscle in his quarters. Does he canter on right lead on the lunge?

I would suggest getting a back man out just to rule out any physical problems. you can then tackle the problem knowing that it is psychological. Make sure he is very balanced on both reins in trot and stick to trot until you are convinced he can attempt to canter from a balanced trot with correct bend. There are loads and loads of exercises to try but remember horses are left and right handed just like people and will always find one side easier than another.
