heres a few pics of millies leg (see post below) as you can see you cant really see any swelling head on so to speak, and its hard to show it really its just swelled out below the knee to about halfway down the leg before her fetloock. its not like a lump if you know what i mean its spread out.

so any ideas of what it could be from these photos?

no shes not lame at all its only come up this morning, a lifgament is my worse fear. my old pony did her suspensory bt it was quite a bit more swollen than this.

Is there heat there? has she got a un-noticable cut where infetion has got in? she might have just banged it, don't think the worst

it has got heat in it, theres no sign of a cut, she may well have just banged it, im reaslly hoping so, mum and dad said maybe a horsefly bite or something, but i am really worried and cant help thinking the worst!

thanks i shall see what its like in the morning and see then, i was wondering whether putting magnetic boots on would do any good or not? i wasnt sure?
i have had a pretty good check for wounds and been touching it over and over.
in the morning we shall see and i will keep cold hosing and possibly bandage, depending on how it is.

i will see what its like on monday because they wouldnt be able to come out until then anyway and if it gets better then there is no need.

it isnt sore to touch and prod, and doesnt seem to be affecting her at all:s so who knows:s

Ahh this looks exactly like what one of my boarding horses did. Ligament damage, through tearing around. We left horse out in the field for about 4 months and the swelling went down and the horse is now 100% sound now.

I'm afraid it looks very much like ligament to me

Best to call the vet asap, cold hose in the mean time as often as you can. Vet wont be able to scan for a few days but at least they can get an idea of the initial damage/inflammation.

Really hope it isnt but I've seen very similar in many ligament injuries

I was advised to use DMSO, which I didn't and owner decided not to either. I found some liniment for it - this seemed to work, although who really knows?

Horse is perfect now though if it's any consolation.

Thanks Vici, check ligament (the name blew out of my head for a minute), that's what was damaged on the horse here and the swelling was exactly the same place.

thanks guys, i would love to think it is a bang but i think my first suspicions could be right as some people on here think.
i shall continue to cold hose our vets wont be opne now anyway to call, as the sugery will be closed so i shall sit it out till monday and any change i shall let you know.

would it be a good idea to stable her? or bandage or both? or leave her out in the field? any ideas about the best way about it will b fantastic

thanks, shes never really a horse to mess around anyway but who knows something could have spooked her..she could have slipped i dont know!
i shall leave her out then and just cold hose

This looks quite similar to something my mare did a year or so ago... much less serious than a ligament thankfully. She got loose in one of the orchards and galloped up the hill over all the rabbit holes, she had just been fitted with remedial shoes at the time for her pigeon toedness. Anyway, she was slightly off, but only on turns, and the swelling started at the top a bit like where a splint is and travelled a small way down the inside of her leg, but no swelling on the outside. There was heat. She lived out, so stayed out, with bandage and cooling gel and hosing for a few days, she was sound two days later and the swelling subsided to form a splint by about a week. She's fine now. Just a pull or strain. Hope your girl has nothing more serious.

And ditto that! My mare did that too - vet said splint on the outside of her leg. She wasn't lame, the leg was very swollen on the outside and it went away with just rest. She was quite pigeon-toed.

my pony tweaked her suspensory and check ligament and it looked like that. and she wasnt lame to a normal persons eye but was to a vets. if you squeeze the tendon just below the back of the knee, and the horse reacts then that can be a sign of suspensory/ check ligament. but hopefully its nothing nasty.

thanks everyone, she doesnt seem to react to any kind of squeezinf it or feeling it at all.
i have checked it this morning and it just looks alittle puffy.. almost all the way down.

i may go and get some cooling gel or clay..something that i can leave on after cold hoseing to try and see if it makes any difference.
