Hi my 6 year old is temperamental with keeping his feet up. If there is food about he will let you pick out his feet no problem. I have been picking up his feet most days and he has been doing really well, he stood for the farrier for the first time at the last visit without needing bribed! Since that visit, just a trim as he is barefoot, he has been resistant to keeping his feet up again. It's worse with his front feet than his back, any ideas? Could he be sore on the front feet? He picks up no problem but then likes to pull out of your hands, even with curling his toe over he will hop about.

Have you had his back checked - chiropractor or physio? New pony had manners issue so we put it down to that until chiropractor treated her for stiffness in right hip. Now no problems picking up or keeping them up for us or farrier.

Practise, practise, practise! Providing there are no underlying issues of course. Make sure you pick them up as often as possible and if he tries to pull away hold on for dear life lol! They soon learn its easier to hold foot up than to nearly fall over when you don't let go!

I haven't had his back checked as he will stand as good as gold if he has his nose stuck in a bowl of food!

Could still be worth doing. The pony would behave better if fed carrots throughout farrier visit but doesn't need any bribery at all since chiropractor saw her.
