This is a bit niche but you never know who’s reading fb and will it come back and haunt you.
A man who I pick up with at one shoot has a dog that takes birds out of other dogs mouths. It grabs and pulls. I am as careful as can be not to work my dogs near him and a couple of times they have, by dint of being faster, avoided it.
His dog yesterday tore a bird out of another person’s dog’s mouth. Other person was livid and there was a lively discussion. The person whose dog mugs was outraged and as I am in the vehicle with him I got to listen to it all afternoon.
If I had a dog that mugged I would not take it out. To me it is a complete no no as it can have such long term repercussions on the ‘victim’. Apparently all dogs do it. Well they really don’t.
It’s hard for me to actually say much as I’m new down here and on this shoot and I don’t want to get a reputation so I just kept quiet. But I wish I hadn’t.
I’ll see him again next week and am already prepping my speech.
And another thing… he’s got a gorgeous black bitch who won’t pick up. I think it’s because if she does she is dived on by his others so she has opted out. He’s ‘going to sell her for breeding’. I want to buy her but tbh she’s worth nothing, won’t pick, no health tests just a decent pedigree. I’m sure she would pick if handled nicely. But just bah!

How much do you need this work? I'd be off out of there if this idiot's behaviour is tolerated. Your dogs could get ruined for working.
Well after next week it will be a long time. Next week I will have plenty of scope to keep out the way as it’s beaters day and he’s shooting. It’s a great shoot and a good team, apart from him.

The shoot I go on is only a small syndicate and the pickers and beaters don’t get paid, which I like as there is no pressure and it was my first season (and my dogs), but I’m sure even our shoot captain would be having words for that!!

Just came here to say buy the black bitch. You don't have black at the moment, do you?

I have a weak spot for black bitches.

I also can't believe that other people tolerate this? I would think if enough people get livid, he'd be booted. Or atleast told not to participate with that dog? Honestly, I couldn't imagine bringing one that did that. I would be rather mortified.

This absolutely wouldn’t be tolerated on any shoot we go on- and we only do small days.

Partly due to the repercussions with the other dogs as you say, but also due to this being highly likely to damage the birds. Which is a complete no no as EVERY bird counts.

I can’t believe he thinks that all dogs do that ? they certainly don’t if they aren’t allowed to! I’d hate to have to work alongside him!

To add one of mine bought me half a pheasant while I was sweeping, from his area, then toddled off and got the other half. I thought ‘oops’ and that it must have been caught up in the rhododendrons. Anyway, I took it to the game cart to fess all and the man saw me coming and grabbed and grabbed it. Said a gun had shot it in half. I find that fairly unlikely and suspect 2 of his dogs had a tug of war. One of his then went and re retrieved it and bought it back while the keeper was there. So the situation might be resolved.

Awful behaviour, drives me up the wall. As you know, my oldest Lab is the softest dog in the world, I keep well away from dogs that do this if I can. We were away in Wales just before Xmas. I didn't have a dog with me. Pickers up were over keen, dogs under guns feet and at one point two fighting just behaind a gun who was shooting. I made sure that I talked about it within ear shot of the head keeper who was hosting for the day, mentioning how it was dangerous as the gun (husband) was clearly distracted. Easy to pinpoint the picker up as this dog was a minority breed.

Clearly you need her, but if she won’t pick up, she can’t be worth much to someone who works their dogs? (I’m just hoping he practically gives her away to you!)

He wouldn't be coming back next season to any shoot my OH was involved with. That's appalling behaviour from an (un)trained dog. I'm assuming his dogs are working as a pack - that he's not handling them?
Your keeper needs to get shot of him. There are plenty of good pickers up out there with genuinely trained dogs.

Well technically he trains them. Not sure how much!

That is incredibly bad form. He would be told he's not welcome on the little shoot I go on. A dog mugged one of my friends springers once, luckily close by as her dog was coming in, the offending dog had already launched at and bitten another dog earlier in the day so friend grabbed it and roared at it and then it's owner...it had the shock of it's life, her dog is very soft and something like that could easily have put her off for life and the hard work that goes into training wasn't about to be wasted.

It always amazes me how much poor dog behaviour is tolerated on some shoots.

Dog aggression and being possessive of birds being two main things. People just seem to think it’s ok for their dog to gob off at another (expecting the other dog to discipline it- not their job!), to allow their dog to mount another one or to sit on the beaters wagon and growl at any dogs that go near the birds ?

Our dogs know that the other dogs there are absolutely none of their business. They look to us to make sure they’re safe.
