Found this in one of the stables today.....

Its about the size of a ten pence piece, feels a bit like a lychee - squidgy but hard in the middle.

 My thoughts were either a 'bean' (though how it would have come out by itself   and shouldn't be bloody) or a shelled sarcoid - my ginger boy had a couple of sarcoids which 'popped' out and looked very like this!

Nope not a testicle although that was my first thought as a colt in the next stable, thought he'd gone into self harming in the night and chucked it over the wall ;)

Yes there is a hole ....;) keep guessing but in 25 yrs with horses I've never seen it before tho I'm sure plenty of you have.

Doh - read Rhino's reply after posting.. Yep it's a shelled Sarcoid. She has two just inside her hind leg. The vet wanted to wait for the second one to grow a bit more before banding them but seems the first one didn't want to wait (see in the pic where it just popped out. The other one looks ready to pop out pretty soon to. It's YO horse so she's going to ring the vet tomorrow just to see what he says. I put it in the bin but I'm going to get it out and dissect it tomorrow - that is if the dog hasn't fished it out..

Ginger horse had 2 like this, both shelled themselves and he has not had any reoccurrence (in 10+ years). Hope yours is the same :)

jess - some do, some don't. I had mine sent for biopsy to be sure it was a sarcoid and the results came back saying it was. That's the thing with sarcoids, they can differ so much.

Hopefully so. She had one start on the side of the her mouth which interfered with the bit so got some of that highly potent cream which cleared it a treat (and meant she had a few week off much to her delight) but because these weren't affecting her way of going the vet said wait for them to grow then band, luckily we didn't need to. The other one you can wiggle about so theres no root. Fingers crossed she'll be the same as your ginge.

I would go on a warble to, but I thought they were rarely seen in the UK now? - sorry too late didn't read the above !

thankfully never had horse with sarcoid but now know what to expect if I do,

Be careful cutting it, they're slippery ,pliant and very very tough. I tried to cut one open, it was too much for my feeble kitchen knife!

Warble fly was eradicated by 1990 according to DEFRA. Think it's still notifiable though.
