Yesterday I posted pics of a yucky bloody mess found in one the stables and did a 'guess what it is' teaser expecting to get at least half an hour of wrong guesses. Rhino however scuppered that in about .2 of a millisecond with the correct answer - Damn you clever clogs ;)

Anyway once I got home I wondered what it would be like inside, It was quite squidgey to squeeze but firm in the middle. Today I fished it out the bin, picked the straw off and cut it in half (pic below) as you can see theres not much to report, don't know what I was expecting :o However I thought I'd post the pic as I'm sure like me many of us had never seen a shelled sarcoid let alone a 'cut in half' one.

Enjoy but if you're having Scallops tonight you may want to look away now

That's interesting, I saw the pic yesterday and thought it was a mangled up testicle at first!! I also wondered if it was an egg  until I saw that Rhino had posted that it was a sarcoid.

Once dissected, it doesn't really look how I was expecting it to, I thought it would be quite jelly/fluidy like!

It sort of looks a bit like mozzarella! :D

Never really knowing much about sarcoids, apart from that they're a tumor, I've just done a google and found the following fact sheet. http://www.vetstream.com/hampdenvets/html/pdf/Factsheets/Horse/24_269968.pdf I found it interesting, so thought I would share! :)

Thats interesting especially as it's by my vets (but not the horse in questions vet)

It was pretty non-descript really, not jelly not gristley, no fluid but then had it been wilting away for 36 hrs. Cut straight through it with a pair of scissors. Didn't smell of anything and the hole has closed up. The one remaining near to the escapee one looks like it could come out soon as well.

the one next to it might well just pop out if you apply some pressure. i had a sarcoid-plagued horse for years and got very good at popping them out when they were ready!

I did think about it but she was a bit humpy with us going there, other one obviously a bit sore. I've got a lesson tomorrow on her so I'll get it after when she's to knackered to kill me :)

Rhino (can't quote now as on phone) what do these sarcoids 'feed off' to grow ? I wasn't expecting to find any sign of blood supply as both sarcoids you can wriggle around and move quite freely under the skin.

I'm not entirely sure, they will get enough from the adjacent tissue to grow to a certain size but are normally limited in their growth as they do not form their own blood supply. In my experience of this particular type of sarcoid they never grow much bigger than the one you found.

Look on http://www.liv.ac.uk/sarcoids/appearance/what/nodular/ for more info on sarcoids, yours would be classed as Nodular Type A :)

I have just had the same experience, asked my vet to band a sarcoid that was hanging off the end of a youngsters sheath, it had been growing slowly for 18 months but was the size of a small marble. Vet applied the band fairly high and when manovering it down the sarcoid popped out with the pressure, it was just a lump of white gristle.
