Given I have had a quiet Christmas on the horses front I thought I would do a bit of a progress report on my rising 4 year old. With the other horses on holiday, I have used the Christmas holidays off Uni to get Celeste going.

Bit of background. I bred Celeste myself, out of my TB mare Millie who evented to 1* level.

Celeste is by the warmblood stallion Sempers Spirit. She was a bit wonky when she was first born.

But quickly straightened out, and gained a first premium at the Futurity as a foal. She then did a bit of local in hand showing as a yearling and 2 year old, doing very well. She even got overall reserve champion at the last show she went to!

In the Spring of 2012 Celeste's half sister Stella was born.

Disaster struck 4 months later when we found Millie dead from a ruptured diaphragm in the field, with Stella trying to suckle off her. So Celeste stepped in and the pair of them have pretty much grown up together since, with Jem overseeing things, just to make sure they don't get too big for their boots!

So into Celeste's 3 year old year, and I had just got her used to the saddle and started long reining and had my first sit on.

When disaster struck for the second time and a scan revealed she had damaged a check ligament messing about in the field. So she spent the summer out in a small paddock with Stella, doing not very much.

At the end of August a scan showed the ligament was healing well, and the vet said to start walk work (either in hand or ridden), building up over 6 weeks to a 40 minute walk. So education restarted with lots of leading out and long reining. After that, as the nights started to draw in and I was busy with Uni she went a bit on the back burner. I had a couple of sits on her, but work didn't really begin until December. I took her for a couple of short hacks round our tracks with Jem, and did a bit of lungeing. This Christmas holidays marked the start of grown up education. She has taken to it like a duck to water, and so far has been super easy. These videos are from a couple of weeks ago, on what would have been about her 7th time ridden, but only her 4th time in the school.

And her first time over poles

She then went on her first proper hack last week with Jem on the roads, and was fab. It was quiet and only a few cars passed but she was super chilled and really grew in confidence. A perfect first foray onto the roads!

So that brings us round to yesterday, where I managed to get my Dad to take some pics of us. We started off with a bit of trot work.

And had a recap about trotting poles.

Before doing her first tiny jump under saddle.

She then managed to land in canter and she had her first canter under saddle.

We then had a trot to start the cool down.

Stella was watching so I hope she is getting tips from her big sister!

And finally we went for a walk down the track for a hundred meters or so on her own (well with mother on foot, just in case). Which didn't bother her one bit.

So that is where we are at. The next plan it to spend a bit of time consolidating what we have done, as she has come on a lot in very short time. Then start taking her out for some lessons and hire a couple of arenas, before doing her first baby competitions around Easter time. Exciting stuff!

Thanks I am so excited about her. It is very special when you've bred them yourself and done everything with them. Hoping she will be as good as he dam.

Lovely to see your update I can never remember if you still had her. So glad it is going so well she seems very relaxed about life.
I did a very light backing of my SS youngster this November and can not wait for spring to start for real.

Aww, they are both so gorgeous!!! Celeste looks like a sweetie but I love Stella's face - I'll bet she'd dead cheeky though... :D

Thanks. She is my first homebred and the first horse I have broken without outside help (having said that I did spend a summer a couple of years ago working on a breaking yard, and previous to that I broke a youngster I bought with the help of my boss at the time), so super pleased with her.

She looks very cute and you're doing a nice job. :)

I'm surprised at the number of comments expressing surprise though - ahe looks about exactly as I would expect, behaviour wise, for a well started horse with a quiet, competent rider.

Wow, not often I have been called competent :-0! Thanks for that. Although I think Celeste should take the credit as she really is so far being very easy.

*frantically touches every bit of wood in the vicinity that I haven't just jinxed myself!*

I love the markings on her head - what a little sweetie. I was sorry to read about her mum, but what an achievement to have two such lovely homebreds, I hope you have every success with them both.
