This is the result of our 16.3hh Shire X TB going down on hard ground after escaping from her paddock and charging around.

The first day, this doesnt illustrate how deep this wound is, the vet could get her entire index and middle finger inside it.

Week or so later, hole slightly smaller, lower skin dying.

Few days later.

Wound now. Healing finally.

I've tried to get these in order!

Manuka Honey! It has been amazing for us and its healing powers.
Sad it happened though, and many quick good healing vibes.

Thanks for posting.

Poor Girl, that looks really nasty.

Are the photos taken in the horses stable? Its just there doesnt seem to be much bedding? I like a big bed in general but for anything injured / prone to nocking itself I always pile the straw in :)

Hope the above comment is not taken the wrong way :)

The photos are taken first thing in the morning after she's eaten/trampled and generally tramped/kicked and poo'd on every inch of bedding she has.

I don't do big beds atall actually, never have really. She does get more than she would usually have, but she'd usually have happy jacks bedding and we were told to switch from it incase it migrated into the wound, hence the straw which I hate using!

Ouch, that's really interesting. I hope she's feeling better soon.

I don't know that this applies in her case, but too much bedding can get in the way of an injured horse moving comfortably around the box. Jack didn't want to lift his leg high enough to get it through a bed of normal depth, and as a result he was dragging it through which I'm sure was uncomfortable and was causing his bed to get pushed to the edges. We just made sure he had massive banks and just enough to be comfortable in the middle :)

Thanks for showing us the pictures, I bet that heals really well. I am paranoid about my horse falling on the roads so I never hack out unless he has his knee and brushing boots in one on. But obviously in your situation this couldn't be done!

I do hope she heals without further trouble. Large injuries seem to heal really quickly, my friends horse managed to drag concrete posts and rope about a mile down the fields and through two fences and a five bar gate (completely snapped in two). She was found with her chest skin hanging down by her knees. Some eight to ten weeks later there was hardly and evidence of this happening at all. Amazing. Her chest was a huge hole at the time and everyone but the vet heard the death knoll ringing. :)

Oh goodness, glad she is healing though! Manuka honey IS excellent for healing wounds but make sure you get the sterile, veterinary grade and not just a jar off the shelf because of the risk of botulism.

my first mare went over the wire riped her knees down to the lowest vessel you could put your finger being the veins

I had to use jellonet gauze http://wound.smith-nephew.com/uk/Product.asp?NodeId=738 and change daily this is the pictures from the 1980s of the healing her knee originally swelled like elephants. I called vet they said oh we have to finish daily surgery first i said )(*^*+_ her knee is swelling up by minute they said sorry we cant sent vet out until routing treatments done J&D never again &(*)^*(&)(_+
I also had a knee stocking which zipped up over the bandage which protects
this was specially for knee injuries I still have it it made bandaging much easier she did however end up with scar swelling on that knee

must say having gone through this I would use Jelonet over anything around today

The second picture shows how large her leg swelled too and this was a few weeks after so guess how big it was an hour after injury happened???????????

Ow ow ow. Bet she went a right thump. My old girl isn't very good on her legs due to arthritis (can't bend her knees to get her out of trouble if she stumbles) and if the ground is even the slightest bit frosty I stick on her Westropp knee and brushing boots for the day. Prevention is ALWAYS better than cure!

I second Manuka honey. Great stuff.
