I am trying to design a house and stables and although I have a fairly good idea of what the house will look like, I am still seeking inspiration for the yard. It will be a small yard (will have c8 acres so probably only 4 or 5 stables) with an outdoor arena. I'm basically trying to put together a scrapbook of ideas so want loads of pics that I can ultimately show to our architect. Will happily look at any that people want to post of their own yards, but also any ideas for websites etc? I've looked at the Scotts stabling one, so other companies like that would be great, or any other lovely yards you have seen :)

Any help greatfully appreciated!

look on some of the US sites for equestrian properties for sale

The main thing to me would be for stables to be inside a barn, for me there is nothing worse than having a totally outside stable and your horse or you has to stand outside in the rain and wind

When we were looking to design our yard, we sent off for brochures for all the stable makers advertising in H&H. A lot of them had page after page of fancy yards and plans. Especially the bigger ones.

I would go for as many stables as you can afford and get through the planning. We have two horses on a yard of six stables - three are full of hay and straw, one is a general box - we use it for clipping/putting horses in while we muck out/friends visiting with their horses, and the other two are for the horses! We also have three pony stables in a seperate building that are full of firewood, lawnmowers and other general "vital" junk!

I think an L shaped design is good, with the back to the prevailing wind. Not too close to the road (our pony stables are right on the lane, and got robbed once - it was easy to throw everything over the fence. With the other yard we have a drive, so its a bigger deal..

lI'm probably in the minority here, but I don't like the stables too close to the house. In view, but blocking the view, as I think it detracts from the value to future buyers who are not into horses..

I had the pleasure of designing the yard when we moved here.

Some of the things to be taken into account.
First you do not want the barn to close to the house, you get to many indoors in the summer.

Secondly, allow plenty of room for storage and room for a tractor and trailer to turn.

Do you want it all under one roof or single separate stables? Do you want a single line or an 'L' shape?

As said, I did the design for our barn, four big (15' x 12') stables, a large loose area for the youngsters and good storage. There are things that I would have liked differently but the lie of the land ruled it out.

If I was designing my own place Id want the stables accessible from the field, but with a big fenced yard so they could be 'yarded' for a few hours of the day to dry their feet out.

Id also be considering an all weather area with a 3 sided shed/barn in or near it :D

I have no idea but this is the yard I grew up on

Six block built boxes that you can see and then down the concrete ramp was a covered walkway running perpendicular to the path you can see the whole length of the stables with a barn to the right for all the hay and straw to be stored in. Behind the barn were all the fields and off to one side the school.

I don't have a photo of that bit but I thought it was a really good layout. It worked well and the stables were lovely and solid and kept cool in summer and warm in winter :)

Because I am soppy and nostalgic I'd probably just have something like this again :)
