Dear little chap - this is just awful. Why can't people who have dogs, accept that they have a responsibility for them and what they do.
So very sorry, and I really hope that he makes a full recovery and that the owner of the dog might learn from this horrendous attack. I could rant on, but I won't.........
wee pet, i do hope the dog owner was responsible enough to offer to pay the vet bill. if not, i hope not to offend you, but i would like to put my money where my mouth is and offer you a small contribution towards it..
contact me if this is okay.
all the best

This photo has made me feel quite emotional!!
Poor little foal. I felt realy sad when I read your first post.
How did this happen ,was the dog on the yard or an unknown dog? It is terrible the damage a dog can do!
I wish you all the best but please update foals progress.
my foal was attacked by a neighbouring dog which was put to sleep by the vet. we dont know why the dog did this as it was usually veryfriendly and visited us alot
What a rotten shame for him. It is very strange how dogs just fly for people. My friend keeps her mare on a yard which has a dog that belongs to the Y.O. The dog has bitten upteen people, and gone for horses too. I have a feeling this will happen one day to one of her horses.
Oh Geronamo, thank you so much for posting these photos. I have never seen anything like it and it is really interesting to see. Obviously must have been a shock to you both and not nice at the time, however looking at those piccies, I'd say you probably won't have to worry too much about bridles, halters and the like. There looks to be enough skin and bone surviving around the hole that providing you keep the throatlashes a little tighter than usual, they should remain on him (when he is older).
I'd be very interested in seeing the photos after this injury has healed, if you find the time to post them. Thank you and very best of luck to you and your little foal.
Still, onwards and upwards, he sounds as if he is lucky to have you and what's done, awful as it is, is done.
If you don't mind me asking please, will the skin graft cover the entire area so that he has no opening there at all?
A thought on bridling/haltering, there are bridles, like the Aussie versions (I think) or lunge cavesson style, that have the throatlash set further down the face than normal English style ones, that may possibly make it more secure.
Hope the little chap continues to recover, and as Tia said, any pictures after the grafts would be interesting to see. Whilst a nasty injury, he should be fine long term and no doubt will learn to use his one ear to gain sympathy and treats as Cairo did with his empty eye socket.
O my,
thats dreadful for a dog to do that! must have been a big dog too!
Well I hope the skin graft takes! and obviously it has not effected his gentle nature towards people so....
Please post photos when it has healed etc, I would be really interested in seeing the results! (sory geeky vet student side coming out!)
Poor boy. I can't begin to even imagine how you felt at first, but you have done incredibly well to keep it looking so good, and your boy looks very happy and confident despite it all. Best of luck for the skin graft, I'd be really interested to see the pics and hear how he copes with it all - it looks like he'll have no probs at all.
thank you all so much for your kind words. the vet came today to check one of our other foals who is sick and put her eye over himthankfuly they are very pleased with the healing and dont think he wil need the skin graft as it is remarkably starting to grow skin and the hole seems to be shrinking so fingers crossedwil keep you all posted
