Pidge out of action for at least 2 weeks!

Well vet been this morning. reckons he has twwisted his fetlock. So now in a tiny fenced off bit of field. Bute for 10 days and off work for at least 2 weeks so not riding club show, Somerford Park or Hunter Trials. The vet did mention if he doesn't get better then they may have to investigate ringbone, but he really doesn't think it is this as there has been so much improvement in Pidge since yesterday morning. So fingers crossed he gets better and looks like we'll be out of action for a while

Has anyone else's horse done something like this and if so how long before they came back to work?
 
Oh no, atleast it doesn't seem to be too serious and he should be back on his feet in a month or so. Will keep everything crossed for a speedy recovery xx
 
Yes, fraid Willow twisted a hind fetlock in the field 3 weeks ago. Theyve scanned it and found a lesion in his suspensory ligament. Although he's only 1/5 lame he's on box rest for further 4 weeks and they will scan it again. I'm gutted, Ive just affiliated him and started to have some success. Dont know how long he will be off I expect a couple of months at least

Thanks Lucie, am now blaming myself as we went for a hack on Saturday and did a short trot and canter on the bridleway

so he probably did it then! On the other hand I know I can't wrap him in cotton wool however much I want to. Just gutted as was so looking forward to going to Somerford Park again and doing the hunter trials! mind you with the ground this hard this early it's debatable what we would be doing anyway! horses eh!

hope you don't mind me asking you but when did they scan it? Couple of months off is a long time, will he have to be on box rest all that time?
Vet gave Pidge a thorough exam, flexion tests etc this morn. did want him on box rest but no other horses are in now and he will do more damage in box stressing so have taped a small piece of field off, next to sunny so at least he will be happy.
 
Oh, what a nightmare - at least its nothing major, a couple of weeks will fly by and we can always go to Somerford another time. Give Pidge a big kiss from May and tell him to get well soon x

so fingers crossed it is nothing major, what is ringbone anyway? Will have to organise another date for Somerford which is such a bugger as was so looking forward to the 8th May. Will give Pidge a big kiss from May and tell him to get better soon so they can be reunited xxxx
 
Aw poor horsey and poor you. It's horrible when all your plans have to be cancelled. At least you know what it is though - mine has had eight weeks box rest so far (was meant to be four then back to work) and countless nerve blocks and x-rays, going to Liphook or somewhere soon to be MRI'd! Fingers crossed Pidge gets better soon and doesn't have to have further investigation. Just makes you realise how you take having a sound horse for granted though!

have never had an unsound horse before, had root tooth infections, wounds that needed vet attention and grass sickness

Poor boy. I've had horses with jarred fetlocks before (done on frozen, rutted ground). She didn't take long to come sound again, I think it was just a couple of weeks. Fingers crossed Pidge is the same x

I wouldn't blame yourself though as I reckon he is more likely to have done it in the field at night or early hours when dark or poor light rather than when you went riding on him the other day.
The ground is so hard at the mo and this rain is very welcome. I was going to ride my lad yesterday as he was reshod on Sat but decided not to due to the ground being so hard and the bridleway where we are based is pretty crap and is full of chalk like stones and not ideal at all. What I wouldn't give to have a leafy, chipped bridleway but sadly Hanchurch is a a bit too far away to ride to until he is in tip top fitness.
But I still reckon your lad did it in the field as you say they are like concrete and horses being horses they properly had a good run around when turned out as I know mine did even though they have been out in the day over the winter they both seem to have more spring in their step now they are out 24/7
I'm sorry about the rides too which you were going to go on. Is there anyone that may lend you a mount for the day ? That's if you still fancied going?
Anyway I hope it's just a minor sprain and that he is soon as right as rain

that's a bummer that you have nowhere nice to ride, I suppose we take it for granted the amount of bridleways round here and Cannock Chase is on the doorstep too.
Don't really fancy competing on another horse even if I could find one as if it was dressage that would be ok but wouldn't jump another as I don't have a lot of confidence jumping, but with Pidge I trust him entirely

it's only because of that that I took him round Somerford Park. never mind eh I'd rather have a fit and healthy Pidge than do the comps, there will always be another show, Somerford Park can go on another day and there is bound to be some more hunter trials coming up!
 
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hunny I'm so sorry to hear about Pidge.

I really hope he comes sound very quickly. And, hopefully this rain will help soften the ground up too.
 
thanks, Vet wanted him on box rest but as he is feeling well in himself then he won't do box rest and would end up doing more damage stressed in the box

so he is in a tiny bit of our field but next to Sunny so is happy and contented. Sunny however is most upset that his buddy is not in the field with him and sulked tonight after they had their tea

poor Pidge he had a very much reduced tea and he was so not impressed!
 
Ahh Pidge, so sorry to hear about your lad, just when you were having such a good time!

My horse Brooklyn did something similar last month - tweaked a fetlock in front, probably from hoolying around in the field. Didn't need box rest - prefer not to do that unless really have to, think it is better for them to exercise if they can - we kept him in walking work, in hand at first and turned him out in a small paddock. After 2 weeks I thought he was better but was still very slightly lame so did another weeks walking and he was fine.
Didn't jump for another 10 days or so. Had to cancel dressage and HT too! But would rather he was sound, there is always another comp.

My other horse Merlin is sound as a pound and it is so strange to suddenly have to deal with lameness!
 
Aw Sue I can understand you not wanting to ride another horse it was just a suggestion. But I have to agree with you that when you form a bond with a horse and you trust them it is very hard to feel the same aboard another.
Let's hope he is soon feeling well though and I do think that being out and about is better for him anyway than being cooped up in a stable. I'm a strong believer that being 'fine' in the head aids recovery, and as such being near to his friends and not being locked up alone away from them should make him feel more at ease and less likely to stress.
Also it will help him to recover more quickly as he will be having light exercise whilst out and about grazing and walking etc and it will keep him moving and prevent any stiffness and seizing up.

Yes I agree about the bridleways and yes it is annoying. It's not too bad it's just that it is very chalky and there are a lot of stones. Also the bridleway is not horse exclusive. You get cyclists, walkers and people walking dogs as it runs nearby to Podmore pool and a small woods ( which sadly you can't ride in ). I can't moan too much about the dogs though as we have taken ours down there and let them off. But only because one of the dogs cannot be let off the lead near me as he runs off but in the woods or by the pool he comes to call every time.
It only gets a little frustrating when you come across a few inconsiderate people who have little respect for horses. Like the other day I had my daughter on Mcfly and I could feel him tense as a dog was approaching. The handler did not make any effort to put it on a lead even when I said I was leading a young and nervous horse. Luckily the horse wasn't too bad and the dog stayed wide but had it have run any closer or near to feet etc there is no guessing what may have happened. I have always caught and put back on the leads my dogs if I saw horses approaching out of respect for the riders and horses because for one thing we are on a bridleway and another out of respect for them both in case on of my dogs caused an accident and I would feel awful about it.
Patches and Mooch I live near to Leycett and Hanchurch is not too far away if you use the various shortcuts. It's just that as I am new to this horse ownership lark and I don't yet have full trust in both my horses I would not entertain the idea of riding up to there ( unless in company of course as a few people on yard have in the past) due to the main roads en route. It's been a while since I have been in those woods and I used to ride in them with friends when I went to the riding school in Whitmore, along Shutlanehead is it called? if I remember correctly?

Whereabouts in Staffs and the borders are you two then? You cannot be too far away if Hanchurch is near to you both.
