Hi there, My 2.5 year old Irish cob was very black and white when I got him last year beginning of October. His black is getting lighter this summer. Has anyone had a piebald cob change colour to grey and white?

My friend has a roan ISH. He’s grey in the summer and a dark bay in winter. It’s pretty funky actually!

you could actually pass him off as 2 different horses over the course of a year

Yes, one of our shetlands was born piebald, was blue and white by 4 and white grey by 10. Her 3 foals all followed the same colour changing from black to blue then externally white.
When you bathed her you could still see the pigmentation on the skin. She was out of a mare who had the same colour changes and by a true black stallion.

that’s interesting, I have no idea about his parents. I can’t imagine his face getting lighter, was that the last place to change? Seems his hind is changing colour at the moment xx

I don't recall if there was a specific place that was last to change. She stood out as a teenager as was white with 3 black feet and one striped one :)

Not exactly the same, but my multicoloured roan/white skewbald is blue roan in spring and Autumn, and red roan in summer and winter, fortunately his head stays a lovely bright bay all year round. Ill try to put pics up shortly...spring (clip growing out so harder to see!)

I'm not an expert, but the white patch at the top of his tail makes me suspect that may be rabicano ticking rather than greying out, especially with it not really extending down his leg.

My dark bay rabicano looks straightforward dark bay in her winter coat, and the ticking doesn't really start to show until she's coming into summer.

My old boss had a very white pony. It wasn’t until he was freshly clipped that you could see the dark patches where he used to be coloured.

I’d say he’s going to be blue and white, possibly almost no colour eventually. One of his parents had the grey gene! My piebald only goes a bit more bay in summer because of the sun, yours is going to be a completely different colour!

I have a blue & white now in her early 20's she is completely white and you can only see the colour when she is wet in the summer as her skin is darker where her blue patches were.

Your fellow's head is still very dark, so I don't think he is gong grey. Greys tend to grey out in the head.

Roan, however, keeps a solid colour in the head and lower legs, so he might be roan (and piebald).

I would call your fellow a red roan, because his basic colour is bay (and white). A blue roan has a basic colour of black.

A had a blue roan once, and he changed from dark to light depending on the season. He was darkest in the winter, I am fairly sure.

Roan always keeps a solid head (and lower legs). I looked closely at your fellows head, then realised that he had been clipped, and that's why he looked a bit lighter on his jowl.

that’s really interesting because my boy was brown and white before he turned black and white too xx

Most people find it hard to believe they are all photos of him. Especially as he looks almost completely "white" in his winter coat.

Do you know your boys parentage?

The photo is last year aged 10 in his summer coat.
