Pig oil and sulphur

i have a horse that has started to rub his mane abit, i have him covered in fly spray and washed him and have applied sudoacream to where he has rubbed. have ordered some Pig oil and sulphur, as i have heard this is ameant to work. i hope its not sweet itch, but seems to be the start of it. i seemed to have got it in time, he is in a field with electric fence all around, and fly spray 3 times aday and cream on mane once aday. waiting on Pig oil and sulphur to come in post as have ordered it online. just thinking does it attract the sun the oil on the rubbed skin or will he burn abit with the pig oil. very little hair rubbed as just seen it on time. have a feeling he will be all right but know i might need to get him a fly rug if he is annoyed. he seems happy at min and this is only recent this week. have spoke to vet he said i am doing everything right just keep protecting him and keep a close eye on it.

any info on this would be great. also on Pig oil and sulphur, as havent used before.

i have 4 animec wormers in the house they are a ivermectin based wormer, wonder if that would work instead of equimax. think i might but equimax and try it the way article reads. and just keep the animec for another time as have 9 other horses.
what you all think of this, worth ago. i didnt even think of worms with sweet itch.
 
Sweet itch is an allergic reaction to midge bites, nothing to do with worms.

Equimax IS ivermectin based (plus praziquantel) you need to read the INGREDIENTS not the brand name.
 
Pig oil is liquid parafin I believe, so not sure about it causing sunburn. I've had a quick look at the thread you posted, but it is a very long one so I'll have to read it at length later on.

The post is an American one, so I'm not sure if what they refer to as sweet itch is the same as ours i,e, there are lots of references to threadworms being the cause, whereas our sweet itch is caused by culicoides (midges).

Interesting to try though - are you considering it?

i know equimax is ivermectin based thats why i was thinking of using the animec as it is ivermectin based too. but it was just when the person mentioned equimax i thought i might just do the exact same way. its worth ago i always thought sweet itch is midge and that article agrees with that, but it is saying that a thread worm is behind that. the thread worm does something and the midges is attraced to that area of the neck ect.
i dont know much about it as i was explaining its my 1st horse that has had it. but if vet says it safe to do i will give it ago. it is ameant to make them itchy for 3-4 days after the dose and repeat in 2 weeks.
so will do it 2morrow, just thought i would share link as anything is worth a try once, if it is safe and ok'd by vet.
 
I'd be really interested to hear your results - don't forget to let us know. Our pony has had it all her life (now 21) and if I could get her some relief it would be wonderful.

i couldnt wait to 2morrow, i know my vet very well so i phoned and asked would it be safe. he said yes but make sure of his weight. my boy is very big horse so vet agreed 1 full syringe there is 600kg in 1 so i doubled the dose as it said and so far ok. will wait and see how he gets on in 3-4 days as it said he should be itchy for that then repeat does in 2 weeks. i will keep using fly spray and sudocream on neck where he did rub. i have the pig oil coming in post but will leave it a while and see how this works, also dont like the thought of using the oil in hot sun well the odd day or 2 we are getting. but i will wait and see. hope this works and will be great to see. i will let you all know.
i used the animec wormer as vet agreed it is a ivermectin wormer and should work same as equimax as both is same base. any way hope all works, would be great for him and me.
 
forgot to add animec is ameant to kill neck thread worms so it might be better wormer than equimax either way at least it says it covers neck thread worms on box. also was reading that the thread worms in the neck annoy the horse so much that they rub mane and when rubs it raw, some pus or serum comes out and midges is attracted to this and really annoy the horse to keep rubbing. just read that in article so thought i would share. anyway im of to bed, night.
 
There seem to be two issues here: (1) sweet itch caused by allergy to the bite of cullicoides midge; and (2) neck threadworms - which as I understand it gives similar symptoms to "sweet itch" and in the US is treated with wormers.

I wonder ..... are there any vets/pharmacologists on here who could enlighten?

I think there is a very real danger of misinterpreting the symptoms of cullicoides midge allergy, which we all know as sweet itch here in the UK, and treating with wormers which the horse may not need and will, long term, build up resistance.

More research is needed perhaps. And perhaps in the US, they are more likely to treat with wormers? (I am aware that they are also more inclined to prescribe anti-biotics for both human and animal situations, than we are here in the UK).

So any thoughts welcome.
 
Hi all, if this is sweetitch..nothing so far i have found can beat benzyl benzoate for this (alltough dont put it open open wounds etc-nappy cream them away 1st :-) ) a new company on ebay sell this and its cheap and works (uk ebay) search biteback, or hyperdug online sell it, again v.reasonable and works!!! please people with sweetitch ponies try this!!! it really works well and stops their suffering!!!
