Pig oil, baby oil or other?

As Ive never have any experience of either of these and before it as never been a problem as panni has always been groomed on a regular basis but Im looking for a product I can spray on panni's legs and upper neck and head to repell the mud. Not necessarily to keep her clean but to help the caked on mud come of her coat. As I cannot groom her on a daily basis and more like a weekly basis it gets layered on and when dry is a pain to remove.
I have heard pig oil being used on the forums before in relation to mud fever etc ... but would it be ok to use generally.
I have used 7 day mud away before and although is good is very expensive and I woould need a bottle a week?! So any recomendations would be great?!
 
If mine are going out into mud I will sometimes (when I remember!) sponge on some liquid parrafin as it's stops the mud sticking and it will just slide off.

Aqueous cream would also do the same thing too, although it can clog the skin up and leave it a bit greasy looking.
 
Ohh Liquid parafin sounds good if it does slide off?!

Where do you get if from in a large quanity and would it go through a spray bottle?
 
In the past I think I did try to spray it on but it was too thick which is why I sponge it on instead. You can get it from Chemists (you may get some strange looks as it's given to people with constipation I believe!!) or you can get it from agricultural suppliers like Scats/Mole Valley/ or even Hyperdrug online etc-they may sell it in larger quantities too...
 
I use pig oil - but I get 25 litres a time as I get through a lot of it as I use it on my heavies legs.

For the rest of the body, use a 50 - 50 mix of hot water and pig oil and wring out a sponge in it and then swipe - don't put under the saddle area.

Finally before you use any type of mineral oil, be it pig oil or baby oil, do a patch test first as some react badly to oil.

It is also good for showing, again mix with hot water but only use a very small amount of oil as if you use too much it looks awful. The coat must be very clean or it brings all the dirt to the surface.
 
I have been looking at pig oil myself for a while now but thought it would just look greasy on the hair? I know some top show people use it but would really worry that I would get my beastie all nice and clean and sparkly and then spoil it with bloody great greasy streaks - any suggestions??
 
I use baby oil (shop's own make as it's cheaper) I just pour it onto my hands and rub it into the legs. It lasts 3 - 4 days so a bottle lasts me a few weeks. My horse lives out 24/7 and has the cleanest legs on the yard! I also rub it into his tail and it keeps that clean as well.
 
We use baby oil too - either shop's own, or bought in bulk from costco!

Totally agree with the patch test comments - quite a few horses have reactions to liquid paraffin, especially chestnuts from what I've heard, some react to pig oil too. Olive oil is another very gentle oil, that you can get in big drums from costco.

I swear by mane and tail conditioner for getting mud out of the tail, and trim the tails a bit shorter in winter to prevent it getting as muddy!

this is a great idea, as i have a grey living out 24/7, if i got Liquid paraffin would i literally just pour some in my hands then rub it all over her legs? and also can i put it on when her legs are wet?
 
Baby oil is so so so good for sweet itch - decided to try it this year and trust me my mare still had a mane and the tail was 100% on last year - cheap but damn fine and my hands are super soft after rubbing it in he he he he he and also sudacream for minor wounds - well works on babys bums so why not horses :)
