Pig Oil: has made my mare loose her hair!

I thought I had solved my mud problems this winter, having used Pig Oil with total success for just over a month now.....until I noticed this weekend that my poor mare is loosing all of her hair where I have applied it!

Its coming out in clumps from her elbow down to her chestnut on her front legs, off the top of her neck, face and above her eyes, and on the inside of her back legs. jeeeees! I hastily washed it all off and tried to stop grooming to halt any more baldness.

Has anyone else experienced this with Pig oil? She's in a right mess: our last hunting foray of the season is in a fortnight, she's going to be bald as a coot by then. Poor girl!
 
Did you patch test first? This is quite worrying as I was going to try pig oil and sulphur on one of ours next winter but I've heard of several other horses having a reaction such as your mare has had.
 
Yes I did patch test.....and all was fine. This has been after 4/5 weeks use with straight pig oil, not sulphur. My other horse who I used pig oil and sulphur on to treat his mud fever has had no reaction...it has worked and cleared up the mud fever.
 
One of my freinds has had exactly the same problem with her dressage horse. Shes now stopped applying pig oil and the ahir is slowly growing back
 
No, and I have been using it for years on a variety of horses combined with sulphur. I do say on my long PM about the stuff do a patch test - one of my TBs did react to baby oil though.

I would wash off - hibiscrub or fairy liquid and hot water will get it all out.

For regrowth - try some megatek - again do a patch test, though I have never heard of anythings having a reaction to it - use it on my hair and nails as well.

I wonder if it is where the hair is shorter and got really soaked with oil that caused this - I use a lot on my hairies, legs manes and tails, but on the bodies, just use a little on a cloth I wipe them with to leave a thin film.

it`s my `must have` thingy at the moment.in fact i may keep my cobs feathers on this year,it has made such a difference,i apply it about once a fortnight and run the comb through once a day.

never heard of it untill i came on hho.
 
Not had a problem with two horses on it. While it has been dry we have not used it that much but if it carries on raining it will be!
