I wouldn't put in the mane, unless you want slippery reins and hands.
Not sure if it helps the hair grow but it does stop the mud sticking and therefore help for mud fever and greasy heels/ scabby knees that cobs are prone to.

Cowboy Magic Detangler & Shine

Absolutely fabulous stuff, I promise. It isn't sticky like an oil so dust and grime wont stick to and be attracted to your horse's mane and tail.

Leaves the horse's hair so soft, smooth and easy to comb your fingers through.

It may seem expensive but it lasts a reasonably long time. You can get larger bottles, too.

Another favorite, and I've tried loads of these products, is Canter Mane & Tail Conditioner Link. Another REALLY good product which does what it promises and one application lasts a decent length of time.

As for Pig Oil: I plastered my filly's legs and tail in it this evening, just before turning her out for the night. It works wonderfully on the legs and tail to keep mud from sticking. People also use it in a misting spray bottle to add shine to their horse's coat, but this must be done in moderation as a build up simply makes the coat sticky and greasy. A very, VERY light application will add a nice superficial shine to the surface of the horse's coat (especially under indoor lighting) for showing, though.

Pig oil doesn't encourage hair growth hun. Good hair growth comes from the inside and anything that promotes healthy hooves will also help a healthy coat, but it takes time as the hair you see is dead.

Mega-Tex Rebuilder is supposed to be excellent for encouraging mane and tail growth. But as ever I agree with BOF, what will really encourage growth comes from within.

A balancer which includes biotin would be a great idea. Or biotin as a supplement.
