If you cannot get it easily locally, then try Heavy Horse Supplies - very helpful and one of the cheapest suppliers.
Pig oil is used to condition feather. Mixed with sulphur it keeps the hair white, in good condition and mite and pest free.
Also excellent as a dash in hot water and a final rinse when showing.
I use in on legs and before using mane and tail bags, used in on these as well to keep them in great condition and mud and tangle free in the winter. Also put a little on the coat in winter to have mud slip off easily.
ive been advised by my vet to use pig oil and sulphur on my cobs legs as he's been diagnosed with mallenders and sallenders... ive ordered mine from heavy horse supplies...
ok ive just looked on there website, Can anyone remember how much you paid for the oil and sulphur?? & what quantity u use to mix sulphur and oil together?
Just so I can make sure the moneys in the bank before I ring up and order..??
I use a lot of the stuff and have two very hairy horses.
Last time I bought 25 litres of oil and 5kgs of sulphur - with postage this was about £70 but it will last me best part of a year and was cheaper than smaller amounts.
I had previously paid about £42 for 10 litres of oil and 2 kgs of sulphur with postage.
Just mix oil and sulphur in an old tub so it looks like a McDonalds thick shake, paint on from knee/hock to the floor and rub well in. Remove all white gold - it will turn black, yellow gold is fine. Fine for your hands.
Can be messy - I do mine in the stable and leave to soak overnight before turnout. I do comb out hair and check for any damage first. Don't wash out legs unless you need to show - more you wash, more problems you can cause. As legs dry, mud will slip off and part the hair and it is dry and white under the layer of oil.
I oil mine every 10 days but we have very thick and deep mud in the winter. Summer, I only use both if very wet. If dry I like to wet legs and rub a handful of sulphur into the feather to keep mites at bay every two weeks.
