I *think* it's because the wild boars yonkeys ago were all lairy.....so they associate them with the pigs now, because they're ancestors/related...I think...don't quote me on it though!

ETA - because I can't spelll

Is it because they go past at 100mph with their sirens blasting and light flashing? And they hide in bushes round corners with radar guns? And when a horse owner has a prob with say tack thieves they're not that interested?:o

Dont know the answer!
But why are horses scared of donkies?

Near us there used to be 2 donkies in a field, thier little stable was right next to a bridel way gate. The amount of people that had trouble going through that gate! There three houses that are down there where used to the continuos slamming of the gate when yet again a horse refused to go through it!

We though it might be the smell but as you walked down the field if the donkies move the horse was gone too, in the oposite direction!

Every horse ive seen near these donkies have had this sort of reaction some more extream than others but all scared to death of sweet little donkies!

Horses are so funny sometimes!

Hehehehe made me giggle.

I dont have a problem with pigs (of the animal variety

) but we do have a problem with cows, especially the ones that chase you.

I think horses are just scared of anything they don't see very often. Chex is terrified of the donkey up the road, but I think its just because he hadn't seen one for years and years (if ever). Saying that, he's also terrified of the cows on the neighbouring farm, but not the ones on his own farm - and they're exactly the same

My daughter and I used to ride past a field with donkeys in and without fail, they would wait until you rode behind the highest part of the hedge and let out an orchestra of brays!!

I'll go along with Peter on that. We live just up from a commercial pig farm and in all the years I've been here I've never seen their pigs, but the horses all spook going past until they get used to the smell.

I used to keep my horse on a pig farm - they were his absolute best friends as he loved to lean over their fencing and sup up the disgusting swill in their troughs!!!

However if I was meeting friends for a hack we had to meet halfway as they could never get their horses anywhere near our farm!!!

Pigs are carniverous and horses recognise this by their smell.

Yes, dead right. I used to hack past a pig farm. You couldn't see the pigs you could just smell them.

I don't know what my horses are going to think when we get our pigs!!! Oh well, they will just have to get used to them.
