Pin worm

Hi has anone had any experience of Pin Worm??? A friend of mine has been struggling with this for sometime. Her gelding has been treated with several things (adviced and administed by the vet). It disappears and then reappears it has left him with very itchy skin.We are unsure if his other ailments are connected and the vets appear to be drawing a blank...... he is being given antibiotics each time he brakes out in these itchy patches they get so bad they weep and his hair comes away.
Any experiencies would be greatfully received.

I had 3 with it this year. My understanding is that the only wormer that treats it is stronghold, and that a double dose may be needed. A subsequent treatment is needed 6 weeks later and may need to be repeated a few times.
I used fuciderm gel on the sores they created by rubbing. That definitely took the itch out of it.
I don't know why 3 out of my 9 got it, but I do tend to use ivermectin or moxidectin based wormers usually.
 
It's not enough to just treat the horse, you have to treat all the places he's rubbed the eggs onto otherwise he'll just get infected again :(

A layer of vaseline under the tail will stop the egg laden fluid from coming into immediate contact with the skin and will slow the itch-rub-egg spread cycle. If the situation is desperate, it might be worth adding a drop of Ivermectin wormer to the vaseline and see if that kills the females when they come out to lay their eggs

Valentine - your friend needs to disinfect everything - stable, fencing, haynets etc. my friend has had to o the same. Think it's been a bad pinworm year!
 
I think we used five day panacur and we applied ivermectin lotion to the area around the bum and the dock every day for one month and that fixed it.
 
There have been plenty of HHO threads about pinworm in the past so I am sure if you google "pinworms Horse and hound" they will come up.

Disinfect everything as other folks have said. Five day panacur was the only one that worked for my lad but that was some time ago before my vet knew there was a developing issue with pin worm resistance for supposedly effective wormers
