As you know, we had Bates PTS on saturday. We have still got Buddy though. He has been with Bates for his whole life and its just hit him that Bates is now gone. Yesterday he spent the whole day lying in Bates' old favourite spot and he slept upstairs with my mum n step dad last night.
Does anyone know how long this behaviour is likely to last or how to make it easier for him. It really is heartbreaking because he wont even go for walks on the same field anymore.
They're like us - they all have to go through the grieving process and I think it would be a mistake to rush things for him. Just carry on as normal, let him be with you as much as he can so he doesn't think you will be leaving him too and he should be back to his normal self quite soon.
Can I ask if you have moved all of Bates' things away or are they still about as he might like a comfort reminder of his own, a little bit like pups like something that smells of mum? Let us know how he gets on.
This happened to Poppy when we had Penny PTS. As Pops is the youngest she had never known life without Penny. For about 2 weeks she really pined and we actually contemplated buying a new puppy to keep her company. After a while she started eating properly again and came for walks etc.
She is that much better now that we have actually decided to hold off getting a new dog for a while. Poppy's personality has really come out now she is the only dog, and being the only dog it is much easier to stick her in the car and take her with me when I go anywhere.
It is really horrid to watch your dog grieving, but your Buddy will be ok eventually.
