I noticed a few days ago on a post i had replied to about pink powder that some of you didnt rate it. fair enough. my horse has been on it maintenance wise for a number of years and is currently on four scoops per day split between two feeds. After i come back from holiday late sept i would like to find something that i can use with a probiotic and a joint supplement in one as the joint supplememt and p.p is costing me about 38 quid every five or so weeks. He is also on magic. Is there anything that combines two or more of these supplements on the market? with shoeing at75 pounds every five weeks and the possibility of having to move yards shortly i am needing to save some money but am loathe to give up on any of the supplements as i feel he needs all three in reality. any suggestions? Will consider anything. vet has said to me in the past when i have asked which could i give up the joint supp or the pink powder to not give up the p.p as he has a high colic risk.

Top equine colic surgeon told me that pink powder has all the right ingredients, but because it is not encapsulated, it is absorbed before it reaches the hind gut where it is needed to work. So basically you are paying for something that is made of the right things, but it is flawed because it can't get to where it needs to be.

Protexin is an encapsulated gut balancer, one of the best on the market.

I'm not sure about combined supplement however, but hack up makes bespoke supplements based on individual needs I think?

What joint supplement is he on? They can vary ingredient wise. Magic is magnesium, hops and brewers yeast and a some St Johns Wort and fenugreek.

You could feed a decent balancer like pro earth etc and add some salt, brewers yeast and linseed to replace the Magic and Pink Powder. But it wont be any cheaper than you are currently paying although it would be more balanced.

Hi thanks for your replies. scats interesting what you have said. fc he is on equine america HA glucosamine chrondroitin and msm.

I agree ref Protexin being a very good gut aid, should you need it. Question whether you need it on a daily basis or whether there are key time of the year.

I'm not sure of the efficacy of all these joint supplements. its not proven in humans, so it surely can't be any more effective in horses. Suspect its more about playing on the emotional requirement of horse owners to do the best for their horse when the reality is we are pouring expensive fillers into our horses. The best every day maintenance for joints is regular exercise and not over loading them with weight. I expect you are wasting your money really and your 'feeling' is just that, not fact. But that's how these clever marketing people suck us all in.

I honestly haven't found any feed through joint supplements that work as well as injectables like polyglycan or Adequan/Legend. The bonus is that those are done less frequently. Not sure what they cost here in the UK vs. what I paid in the US.

If you need Protexin, you'll particularly need it during stressful events like competition... or moving yards. Some feeds are formulated with it (Dengie Happy Tummy comes to mind). Not sure how cost effective it would be vs. your current program vs. adding separate ingredients.
