My sec D has a largely pink-skinned face which I was expecting to sunburn over the summer (and it did and he was then very head and muzzle-shy so bit hit and miss with sunscreen) but am finding he still seems to be having problems with it, despite all this non-sunny weather...I know UV rays can still penetrate cloud but am wondering now if there is something else I could be doing for him - he seems to have one particular patch of his pink muzzle that looks even thinner-skinned than the rest and although I can't be sure because he's so muzzle-shy, am wondering if it is just very sore generally (and hence probably why he doesn't want me to cream it). If I get caught out by ineffective creaming and he scabs up, it does heal up once I get back on it but was just wondering whether other pink-skinned horse owners find similar and if so, is there something you use as a preventative rather than a remedial treatment?
I am working on his muzzle-shy issues elsewhere but sure there will be a bit of chicken-and-egg going on here. ie I'm sore, don't touch me, but if you don't touch me you can't cream me, so I'll be sore...
I was recommended Gold Label Udder Cream for a headcollar sore on his easily-balded thin-skinned face but am wondering if the active ingredient (flyscreen) would just irritate his sore pink patch even more.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance!

My mare is the same. She has a White face and this year despite the dull over cast days her sunburn was the worst it's been in 3 years. I have found that a full face fly mask with the nose and sudocreme does the job. She hasn't had any signs of it since I have started that.

Something like the equilibrium mask with nose bit :)

Does said horse have any other skin stuff going on?

The other thing is trying a roll on sunscreen and a spray cream - though I've found it much easier to put a mask on to atop it for my pony!!

My friends horse had this a few weeks back and we couldn't understand why as he's in in the day and out at night other than standing with his head over the door we couldn't see where it was happening so put it down to that.

Boots medicated nappy cream in white tub, absolutely plaster it on, my friends horse didn't like it one bit but when I insisted he gradually put his head down and I could see he was actually thinking oh that's quite nice and cooling, in the end he just let me do it, if your horse puts his head too high, stand on something so he learns no matter how high he goes he's still having cream on, will be better in a few days

Missed these replies as didn't get a notification for some reason...thanks for replying and sorry for seemingly abandoning the thread!

He has started with a rubbed patch halfway up the neck, under his mane from base of mane downwards - first day I saw a tiny blob of blood which made me suspect irritated insect bite and he had obviously rubbed and balded it already...plastered with cream and by day 3 has now formed a thick crusty scab...wondering gloomily if this is start of sweetitch - have only seen it already established on horses, does anyone know if it starts like this?

Re buttercups, yes there have been some in the field and still one or two, so this is possible and seems more likely than sunburn in last couple of weeks as really have had no sunshine much to speak of...will look into that, presumably uproot them?

Also, have treated him for mild conjunctivitis in last couple of days..so am wondering if he is going to be a generally sensitive type/possible allergy type as I seem to have done nothing but rub various creams on various different sores since I had him..he's got two blue eyes too and according to the research I did, carries the 'Sabino' (coloured horse gene) so is really a skewbald masquerading as a bay..hence his large amount of pink skin

Stick him on some immuplus and restore by global herbs toboost his system.

Keep and eye on the sores - perhaps rug him in a solid fly rug too keep worst of sun/flies/pollens off him and see if it helps?

My horse has a full pink muzzle and so he has Sun off and a nose mask that is designed to go over the nose of the headcollar to cover the nose. He burns very easily so is now in during the day in summer and out at night.
Also if i need to get him out/ in quickly i use a spray sunscreen much easier, however it is funny seeing everyone elses horses walking round with white patches on them where he's wiped his nose ha ha

Hmm not come across that, thanks..might make sense as he had a traumatic accident as a foal and was then forcibly and inadvertently weaned..for a relatively young horse his feet have also been poor, which is partly down to no trimming but am wondering whether all these things combined (plus apparently a period last winter of questionable nutrition) have compromised his immune system so could be worth a try..:)
