Pinworm and finding dead worms - how long for?

Does anyone know how long you would expect to keep finding dead pinworms in poo after worming with pramox or injecting with dectomax?

I'm not sure whether you would expect to find them only in the days after treatment, or whether the horses would keep throwing them out for the time that the treatment works (I think pramox and dectomax both work for around 13 weeks)

Thanks

Hi Comet, usually just after worming. The problem with pinworm is that it readily reinfects. To be honest those products are not the best treatment for pinworm, you need the old fashioned wormers like pyrantel and Panacur as they are more likely than modern ones to reach the hind gut.

Pooh what a good question..........when I did mine I saw worms for a couple of days, no more. As the worm only sits in the back passage common sense suggests that they should clear up in a relatively short period. Unless reinfected. I am happy to be corrected.

Your best bet is to use Panacure Guard 5 day treatment its what the vet recommends to the livery on our yard as she is on day 2 of the wormer as she has had pin worms a long while.

I am not aware that dectomax works on pinworm (and trust me, I have asked lots of vets and SQPs!). Pramox isn't much good either, too modern and absorbed too early in the gut.

Best options are alternate months of double dose strongid P and panacur 5 day guard.

Good luck, I'm still battling 10 months on...

Thanks everyone for the replies.

I lost my original post on my phone so only retyped a shorter version. The issue is that I don't think it's my horse that has them (although I know every owner would probably say that :))

Mine was only bought recently, but was on a worming regime and was wormed four weeks ago when she came to me. Since finding the worms, she has also been worm counted which came back as zero (although I appreciate it doesn't cover pinworms or tapeworms but at least I feel like it confirms that the worming was stuck to previously). She also came from a yard with immaculately poo picked fields. She has no signs of rubbing whatsoever, and has been having daily bum checks and no discharge or anything abnormal there.

She moved into this field which, through no fault of the owners currently using it, is basically full of poo! There was also quite a lot of swapping horses with one previous livery so quite a few horses have been and gone. In addition, I think the worming has fallen by the wayside. My other horse is in another field so I keep on top of that myself, but I don't think these have been wormed this year (although I could be wrong). I know one of them has been receiving clear worm counts (although irrelevant for the pinworm). Myself and one of the other owners are poo picking, but even with it being done every day we aren't even making much of a dent on it. It's made harder by the field being quite overgrown.

The worms appeared within 24-48 hours of a couple of the horses who had been given dectomax, which is what made me think there must be a link there. Either way, whether it is mine with the issue or whether it's actually in the pasture, it seems we're going to have problems with this for some time :-(

Has anyone had a pinworm test done? I assume the vet does this rather than it being something you can send off?

You can use some sellotape around the anus then send it off to westgate, but to be honest you'll be able to see the gelatinous mass of eggs around the anus.

It usually looks like creamy discharge, or like dried yellow/orange crusting.

Thanks. There is absolutely nothing there, which is a relief. Such a pain though that it looks like it's probably due to/or been made worse the lack of poo picking. And I'm a bit fed up that I feel like mine is getting the blame.
