Quick little update, because he is just such a cool little guy!

So we really haven't been able to get out much - lots of things we've been entered for have been cancelled, and not many shows have co-coincided with days I don't work/have uni. So he's only been to one dressage, literally a month ago! I posted about that here - http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?718414-Pip-s-New-Year

We entered one last minute for Wednesday, before looking at the forecast. Always a mistake ;) It was windy and rainy and horrible! We did nearly consider wussing out. To be honest it was so grim I gave him a ten minute warmup (he goes best on 30 mins plus) so he definitely wasn't as soft and loose as he can be, but he was just good as gold and apart from some minor bum-swinging into the rain, totally ignored the weather.

We did N28 and N38Q. 28 was fine, it's a bit of a prelim-y test and I think he doesn't find it very exciting, he got a little flat at times, but it was fairly accurate, he was very obedient, it just wasn't thrilling.

For 38, the weather really got worse, it was a sort of spitty rain, and windy so I couldn't see where I was going! Definitely made some egg shaped circles ;) He was super though, more forward and supple than the last one (though I really should have done double the warmup) and although I know my accuracy was lacking at times, it all went pretty smoothly!

So very pleased with the little man. I still have plenty to work on, one thing that was picked up in both tests is he gnashes a bit - I think it's a bit of a habit now, unfortunately he hates flashes/drops so I don't want to use one. Any advice for a horse that's fussy in the mouth? I know it's probably to do with him being unbalanced which will improve in time, but it's a shame as it ruins the overall picture a bit.

Can't be complaining though - 66% in 28, and 72% (!!) in 38, first place in both!

So yes, good day out, in spite of the rain! Love this funny little horse to bits!

He is an attractive little chap. I would think he just finds the work challenging and it shows in tension in his mouth. Have his wolf teeth been knocked out.

He hasn't got wolf teeth I don't think! But I will check tomorrow. Do you think he'll outgrow it as he gets stronger? He's definitely not as fit now as he was in the summer and I would say it's more noticeable again.

Wonderful update and scores, well done!

Topaz is a mouth opener rather than nasher, we put a loose flash on at shows to disguise it a bit. However at home we work on getting her to relax her jaw when she gets tense and then opens her mouth, so flexions and not letting her hold onto the bit. We also took her out of the loose ring lozenge and into a eggbutt myler, which is much quieter in her mouth which seems to help.

Wow amazing! Looks absolutely super. My mare grinds and wobbles her lip when she gets a bit stressed out or has to concentrate too. Have heard bit butter can help too :)

What is his current bit? Mum's mare is a right player and was quietest with a mullen mouth hanging cheek which just serves to keep the bit very very still. Never tried gumbits, I imagine it might have made her worse! We have a horse on the yard that grinds, I actually couldn't ride him because of it!

Excellent result.

Mine chomps rather than grinds his teeth, I found a lozenge had too much movement and that a sprenger balkenhol worked best for him. A myler comfort snaffle also helped, but he was too fixed in the eggbutt version. For mine it was about getting some tongue relief without too much movement.
