I am sure I have read that you can give Piriton to horses - it has been suggested that Frodo's swollen knee might be a reaction to a sting/bite so anti histamines might work. On the basis that they won't do any harm I was going to give it a go - does anyone know what the dosage for a horse is please? He is a full TB weighing 420kg by the weigh tape (although I strongly suspect he is less than that!) Cheers :)

Pro rata the human dose - human average weight is around 70kg. Apparently they don't stay in the system long so you need to divide the daily dose and give at least twice a day

Fab thank you JillA, I will dose accordingly - we have a nurse on the yard who advised that it isn't always pro-rata so I thought I'd check, much appreciated :)

I used homeopathic apis mel 30c on my horse and myself for insect bites and stings with great effect and no side effects. It would be worth considering on a swelling due to a fall or slip as it works best on hot swellings. Dose two tablets 3 times per day for at least 4 days.

One of mine reacts to horsefly bites - he gets 8 tablets a day, 4 morning and 4 evening. 16h friesian weighing approx 500kg.

My vet told me to only give double the human dose to my mare for her seasonal allergies but everyone else always seems to suggest much more

I'm pretty sure when my TB had allergic bites I gave him 5 a day. I also used the cheap non-branded generic form that costs about 75p for half a dozen but same active ingredient.

Tiny Fuzzy is 33inches tall. Currently is on 10 piriton twice a day (20) which seems to have stopped the worst of her summer rhinitis.
She is still occasionally snuffling, but the constant snuffling and swollen runny eyes have stopped :)
Vet drops me off a tub of 500, costing around £11 (love my vet).
Just started 2nd tub, will drop her down to 5 twice a day once the pollen levels settle a bit and then down to nothing by around end of August, till it starts up again next spring :)
