Previous years I have used piriton and a sweet itch rug to control my mares allergy to fly bites. Now she is in foal I am wondering if anyone as used piriton with mares in foal and would it be safe? As it is getting to that time of the year agian. I dont really want to use harsh fly sprays and I am currently using a well known cosmetic brands skin so soft. But she has still come in with a couple of bites but not reacted as yet. when she does she looks like elephant horse....swells everywhere:)

I don't know about horses, but it should not be used by pregnant women, so I would extrapolate that and not use in pregnant mares - you risk producing an offspring with no histamines apparently. The result would be dreadful. Hope this helps. I should have a word with your vet if I were you.

Thank you for your reply. Was really just wondering if anyone had used while mare in foal but now you have told me that will not start using them again this year.:D

Loratadine (clarityn) is occassionally used in pregnant women, but it is off lisence. The companies aren`t allowed to test on pregnant women to prove either way.

But dont take my word for it. Speak to your vet first.

Thank you for your reply sprite1978, I think we will give the piriton a miss this year. The few warm days we have had we seem to have managed with a coating of watered down baby oil, skin so soft body oil and wonder gel where the blighters have bit her udder and arm pits. No major bites yet so fingers crossed :D
